Job Description

As directed by the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve, this position assists departments and areas as they create programs, products and initiatives that move forward the mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Artificial Intelligence Lead (AI Lead) is a manager position that is responsible for coordinating and evaluating proposed uses of AI and ensuring compliance with approved Church standards and processes, especially regarding ethics, intellectual property, data privacy, visual identity, doctrinal accuracy, and research protocols, among others. The AI Lead collaborates closely with internal experts in legal, information technology, publishing content, ethics, and security roles. Expertise in intellectual property and data privacy law, product management and a deep understanding of digital transformation are key to this role. The AI Lead influences the Church AI ecosystem by partnering with departments to implement best practices in order to create a lasting impact on the lives of millions throughout the world. An ability to articulate strategies to leadership and cross-functional teams is critical, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation.

  • Enterprise AI Strategy: Collaborate with key stakeholders and partners to spearhead the creation and execution of a comprehensive enterprise AI strategy.
  • Guidelines and Governance: Develop and recommend guidelines, governance structures, and initiatives that align with and support the overarching AI strategy.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and best practices on data privacy, intellectual property, ethics, and AI governance, both locally and globally. Ensure the responsible and ethical use of generative AI by departments or areas to create content and messaging products within the approved publishing and Correlation certification processes.
  • Advisory Role: Provide guidance to AI product managers on best practices that are consistent with Church AI strategy. Provide insight into how AI may benefit proposed Church products and how policy-related action items may apply.
  • Resource Alignment: Create and execute a plan to efficiently align resources with the AI strategy. Ensure that redundant and duplicative AI work is not occurring. Bring together those who are working on similar solutions or products and encourage them to “counsel together.”
  • Omnichannel Strategy: Work in close cooperation with key stakeholders to implement a Church-wide omnichannel strategy, promoting a seamless user experience across all platforms.
  • Performance Measurement: Establish key performance indicators for AI products, and regularly monitor and report on their effectiveness. Monitor and evaluate the implementation and impact of the AI guidelines and governance across Church departments and Area Offices.
  • International Collaboration: Engage with area presidencies and staff to identify and address the needs for AI applications worldwide, ensuring our AI solutions cater to a global audience.
  • Team Leadership: Lead a team of AI strategy partners, fostering a collaborative environment and encouraging the quality, reliability, and trustworthiness of AI solutions.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Regularly communicate complex strategies and progress updates to leadership and cross-functional teams, fostering a culture of transparency, collaboration, and audience understanding.
  • Training Development: Design and deliver effective training programs for internal staff on AI tools and best practices, ensuring alignment with business goals and performance metrics. Educate product manager on how to appropriate use AI within approved publishing and Correlation policies and processes.
  • Regularly manage the work of other employees (may include mixed workforce).
  • Responsible, in partnership with HR, to hire or fire employees and recommends advancement, promotion or any other change of status of employees within their reporting line.

Required:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a field relating to AI policy and compliance, such as law, business administration, project management, technology leadership, etc.
  • Experience: Ten years of experience in a relevant field (e.g., data privacy, compliance, intellectual property, ethics, machine learning, data science, etc.) and a strong understanding of the technical, legal, and social implications of AI. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience, with a proven track record of successful product management or business creation, will also be considered.
  • Skills and Attributes: The candidate should have a passion for digital technology and vision for significant opportunities in providing experiences and content that enhance experience with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The AI Lead will also work with stakeholders and comprehend and understand needs across diverse audiences and business operations. Humility and the ability to listen first and understand is essential.
  • Leadership and Management: The candidate will have a solid understanding and experience with formulating and executing on strategy. They will have the ability to understand, prioritize and build consensus around strategic needs. They must be able to operate in an environment that manages the needs of many stakeholders at differing levels. Interpersonal skills and communication are key, as well as the ability to develop trust based on competence and goodwill. The position will also need to work closely with related positions. They must have strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Continuous Learning: The candidate should be passionate about AI and its potential to create positive social and environmental impact, while also being aware of its challenges and risks.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in a field relating to AI policy and compliance, such as law, business administration, project management, technology leadership, etc.
