The School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (IAS) at the University of Washington Bothell (UWB) has a full time (100% FTE) tenure track Assistant Professor (9-month service period) in Data Visualization and Analytics position with an anticipated start date of September 16, 2025. Possible areas of focus for these positions include: computational biology, computational social science, data science, data visualization art, digital geographies, digital humanities, scientific visualization, geographic visualization, geospatial data analytics, quantitative literacy, statistics, and statistics education.

This position will be expected to carry out an active research agenda (area of emphasis is open) and teach undergraduate courses in data visualization, applied statistics, and data analytics as part of IAS’s rapidly growing BA and BS degree programs in Data Visualization and minor in Data Analytics Minor. The typical teaching load for the tenure track in IAS is 5 courses spread across 3 quarters.

IAS is a non-departmentalized unit of about 70 full-time faculty and more than 20 undergraduate and graduate degree programs that bring together the arts, humanities, social and natural sciences. IAS provides a rigorous liberal arts education that draws connections across academic disciplines and links classroom learning to community-engaged problem solving in the public and private sectors. The base salary range for this position will be $80,000-85,000 per year ($8,889-$9,444 per month), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research/scholarship and service

This position will be expected to:

●      Engage in data analytics, including (but not limited to): predictive modeling, machine learning, data mining, textual analysis

●      Apply principles, methodologies, and tools for data visualization including visual/geo-visual perception and communication, data storytelling, information design, and prevalent visualization software and programming languages like Tableau, Python, and/or R

●      Secure external research funding from grants, sponsorships, or partnerships

●      Deliver innovative and effective pedagogy in data visualization and analytics in the context of a liberal arts education

●      Support and engage students from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and academic backgrounds

 

 

Qualifications

●      Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) by time of appointment. The disciplinary area of concentration is open, but candidates must have a strong grounding in data visualization and data analytics.

●      Evidence of scholarship and engagement with emerging Data Visualization methods.

●      Expertise in mentoring undergraduate students in their classroom and field of research

●      At least one year of experience using data visualization and analytics professionally or in the classroom.
