Bioinformatics Technician
Job Description
Summary
The Bioinformatics Technician will be responsible for leading bioinformatics projects, supporting computational activities by the research group, and providing assistance to other group members. The technician may also help with other tasks, including field sampling, laboratory experiments, and protocol development, as needed.
Essential Functions
- Plan and perform analysis of biological and environmental data. The technician needs to work with the PI on analysis, suggest ideas, advise on obstacles and pitfalls of specific data sources and analysis techniques, and convey findings in a clear manner.
- Prepare written documents on data-related projects. Document types include progress reports, project summaries, journal articles.
- Provide data support to students and faculty collaborators. In consultation with PI, assisting others with programming issues on their individual research projects.
- Maintain data libraries and compile standard bioinformatics workflows. The technician will ensure that lab data is properly archived and accessible to group members.
- Supervise undergraduate research assistant(s), including appropriate training of students and development of research projects for their completion.
- Participate in internal and external meetings
- Other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
The following Degree is required:
- Bachelor’s degree required. Degree must be conferred at the time of application.
The following Degree is preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in an area of biology, environmental science, data science, or a related field
The following Experience is required:
- 2 years of statistical programming experience with multivariate biological data
- 2 years of aquatic microbiology research
- 1 year of field and laboratory research experience
- 2 years of experience as a GA or student employee is equal to 1 year of professional experience
Additional Information
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Competency with Mac and PC
- Use of R, Python, Github, Microsoft Office
- Knowledge of microbiome science, aquatic ecology, and multivariate statistics/ecological modeling
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Experience conducting original research projects
