MedIT provides information technology support for the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. Our mission is to partner and collaborate with clients, University, and third parties to determine value based, sustainable technology solutions that enable the Faculty to achieve its academic mission.
The Data Architect reports directly to the Associate Director, Service Delivery and will work closely with other members of the MedIT Team, Central IT, and diverse stakeholder groups at Temerty Medicine. The incumbent will advise and develop an on-going Data roadmap that anticipates future growth and demands, improves security posture, data assets, and elevates the profile of Temerty Medicine and the University of Toronto. In addition, the incumbent will lead data related initiatives and develop standard technology offerings for Temerty Medicine, in efforts to improve scalability and sustainability.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing data architectural direction and oversight to develop a holistic view of data strategy, data processes, and data assets across Temerty Medicine
- Architecting a robust, scalable, secure, and sustainable framework to maximize integration opportunities across all Temerty Medicine and Central IT platforms to promote data accuracy, integrity, and security.
- Developing and sustaining Enterprise data governance policies, and standards at Temerty Medicine to ensure data access, accuracy, flow, traceability, classification, compliance, consistency, retention, storage, integrity, and security are promoted throughout all data platforms.
- Creating, designing, reviewing, transforming, deploying, and developing data models and data roadmaps to meet current and future needs of Temerty Medicine.
- Act as a technical lead by leading and planning IT projects including defining requirements and scope of complex projects with broad impact and long-term consequences.
- Establishing a close working relationship with Central IT while actively evaluating current and future technology offerings.
- Advising, advocating, and influencing necessary stakeholders to ensure selected technology solutions are sustainable, efficient, and effective for Temerty Medicine and the University of Toronto.
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
- Minimum eight years of experience working as a database administrator and ETL developer.
- Experience working with both RDBMS (Microsoft SQL, MySQL) and NoSQL databases.
- Experience in data modelling and query performance tuning on SQL Server, MySQL, and Azure/AWS platforms.
- Experience working with large and complex data sets, as well as, experiencing analyzing volumes of data.
- Experience in the creation of physical and logical data modelling and administration of databases.
- Experience with system management, performance monitoring, data security, backup, mirroring, replication, change management, high availability, and disaster recover solutions.
- Experience leading IT projects, including defining requirements and scope of complex projects and conducting project costing, scheduling and resourcing
- Experience with Data Lakes, Big Data, Data Analytics, Predictive Analytics, data transformation frameworks, database refactoring/re-engineering.
- Expert level skills with PHP and Python, including experience in querying and manipulating large data sets using data querying languages (e.g. SQL), scripting languages (e.g. Python), or statistical/mathematical software (e.g. R, SAS, Matlab).
- Expert data modelling and database design skills (both dimensional and relational). Advance knowledge and experience working with database design, maintenance and operations on various platforms, application security, and disaster recovery.
- Experience with designing and deploying compelling dashboards using business intelligence tools (e.g. PowerBI). Knowledge in applied statistics (e.g. hypothesis testing, regressions, predictive modellings) or experimentation (e.g. A/B testing) in an industry setting.
- Exceptional analytical skills, showing fluency in the use of tools such as MS SQL, MySQL, and strong ETL language SQL programming skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills at both a technical and business level, able to build and foster positive relationships with highly dispersed and dynamic teams.
- Experience with Agile development methodologies.
Assets (Nonessential):
- Experience with data cloud solutions such as Microsoft Azure – Data Lake, Data Factory, Data Bricks, or similar.
- Experience with SharePointsite collection administration and development.
- Experience with Power Platform and integration with enterprise grade database for reporting.
- TOGAF (or similar architecture methodology) certification.
- Application development experience.
- Project management (PMP) is an asset.

USW Pay Band 18 — $114,486. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $146,408. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
