Mercari
Data Scientist
Job Description
Mercari is Your Marketplace. We make it super easy to sell (or buy) almost anything. We all have things we don’t use, never used or simply outgrew. But that stuff still has value. Mercari gives you the power to simply sell it, ship it, and earn some cash for it. Fashion to toys. Sporting goods to electronics. All the brands you know and love. Our mission is simple: to make selling easier than buying. And with 50M+ downloads in the U.S. and 350k+ new listings every day, we’re just getting started.
As a Data Scientist, you’ll transform complex data into actionable strategies that shape our platform’s evolution, helping millions of users connect and transact. You’ll collaborate within cross-functional teams to guide product development from ideation to launch and beyond, ensuring optimal decision-making at every stage.
What you’ll be doing:
- Deep Data Exploration: Dive into complex datasets, applying advanced statistical methods and machine learning to uncover patterns, trends, and actionable insights within our C2C ecosystem.
- Strategic Roadmap Development: Partner with product teams to design and execute A/B testing experiments, rigorously analyze results, and quantify impacts on core KPIs. Shape the product roadmap based on your findings.
- Insight Communication: Effectively communicate complex data-driven insights to diverse stakeholders, tailoring your message to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Sophisticated Modeling: Develop predictive models to understand key marketplace dynamics, including customer lifetime value (CLTV), user churn, recommendation systems, pricing optimization, and fraud detection.
- Data Architecture Expertise: Design and maintain scalable data pipelines and dashboards, ensuring seamless data access and insights generation across the organization.
- Mentorship and Collaboration: Support the growth of junior analysts and data scientists, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement within our data-driven organization.
What you’ll need:
- 5+ years of experience in data science, preferably with a focus on e-commerce or marketplace platforms.
- Mastery of Python, SQL, and Big Data technologies (BigQuery preferred).
- Expertise in statistical concepts, A/B testing methodologies, and experimental design.
- Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms (supervised and unsupervised), feature engineering, and model evaluation.
- Domain Experience: In-depth knowledge of C2C marketplace dynamics, user behavior modeling, and e-commerce metrics.
- Superb Communication Skills: Ability to explain complex models in clear, concise terms, visually and verbally, to inform strategic decisions.
Bonus Points:
- Experience with Looker, Jupyter Notebooks, and other data visualization tools.
- Experience in natural language processing (NLP) for analyzing user feedback and reviews.
- Passion for marketplaces and the user-centric dynamics of C2C platforms.
