The Digital Process and Systems Analysis group within Process Development plays a key role in providing data infrastructure, platforms, and analytics to support drug substance technology operations. The team supports the end-to-end process development lifecycle from pre-pivotal development through commercialization, covering all of Amgen’s product modalities. This specific role is part of a group that develops, implements, and sustains digital assets such as data pipelines, database tables and data analytics applications at all data asset lifecycle stages.
This Data Scientist role will be part of a team focused on advancing digital capabilities for the drug substance technologies organization. In this role, you will develop, evaluate, and improve Amgen’s digital assets, collaborating as part of a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers on a wide range of problems. The ideal candidate will solve complex and open-ended “no single right answer” challenges by advancing data architecture and creating high value data analytics. Scope of work in this role is inclusive of digital systems related to process monitoring, technology transfer and commercial manufacturing support in addition to supporting larger, cross-functional digital initiatives.

Support digital systems and applications (e.g., Spotfire visualizations, SIMCA models, Databricks infrastructure and code repos, Product Lifecycle Management) to provide insights through integration of multiple data sources

Develop comprehensive understanding of Amgen data structures and metrics, advocating for changes where needed for process improvements

Support design and development of data pipelines to extract, transform and load data to support digital technology transfer solutions

Support data governance and good data practices including but not limited to ontologies, reference data, and semantic modeling.

Leverage large datasets to conduct end-to end analytics projects that include data gathering and requirements specifications, processing, analytics, ongoing deliverables, and presentations

Interact cross-functionally with a wide variety of people and teams. Work closely with engineers to find opportunities for process design improvements for Amgen products

Make business recommendations (cost-benefit, forecasting, scenario analysis) with effective presentation of findings to multiple level of stakeholders through visualizations

Contribute to establishing a robust data science strategy by providing recommendations related to process monitoring, data engineering, analytic platforms, analysis plans, and other relevant areas of data science

Enabling generative AI use cases for drug substance technologies

Basic Qualifications:

High school diploma / GED and 8 years of Data Science or Engineering experience OR
-
Associate’s degree and 6 years of Data Science or Engineering experience OR
-
Bachelor’s degree and 2 years Data Science or Engineering experience OR
-
Master’s degree
Preferred Qualifications:
-
3+ years of work experience in biotechnology role (e.g. a statistician, statistical programmer, data analyst, data scientist, or process development/process engineering)
-
Experience with programming (e.g. R, Python) and database languages (e.g. SQL), as well as data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau, Spotfire)
-
Experience with statistical data analysis such as linear/non-linear multivariate models and hypothesis testing

Experience with Amazon Web Services, and/or Databricks, and/or Snowflake

Demonstrated skills in selecting the right tools given a data analysis question

Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills ability to plan and effective
-
Demonstrated leadership, self direction, and ability to effectively plan and follow through on complex projects
-
Ability to learn new techniques and provide technical leadership for key initiatives. Enthusiasm for training customers and teammates
-
Enthusiasm to build and maintain effective collaborations with partner organizations across Amgen’s Process Development and Operations Networks

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
