Data Scientist – Track Evaluation
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The Analyst/Data Scientist will be responsible for Data Management and Control within the Track Geometry Group. The role provides direct assistance to the Manager Track Evaluation and Specialist Track Evaluation/Data Methods with supporting Digital Track Notebook (DTN), AMA, producing/publishing Rail Profile Reports and Image Data Analysis.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Develop new business rules based on image data analysis key findings and root causes
- Develop and produce machine vision algorithms to identify safety defects on railway structure
- Support business case developments for new technology purchases and/or process integrations based on data analysis results to improve railway safety and efficiency
- Propose new processes and technologies to enhance investigation data retrieval and processing capabilities to increase productivity
- Define requirements and work with IT staff to incorporate all technological changes
- Control / Filter access to Track Systems Data for both internal and external customers / requests;
- Pull Data Queries for both internal and external customers including derailment information
- Performs periodic quality inspection reviews of the TEC output to ensure the quality and reliability of the data
- Develop/Publish Rail Profile Plots / Reports for Capital Planning
- Provide vacation relief within Track Geometry group
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or computer science from an accredited college or university or 5 years of railway experience in Engineering Services
- Experience implementing data mining and machine learning concepts OR evidence of project work in school in artificial intelligence fields
- Experience with AWS and/or other cloud providers
- Experience with applying machine learning modelling to image data
- Experience in Data analysis and the ability to draw conclusions and communicate results, Prior exposure to Geometry Brush Charts (WinDBC, ARIES, GEOEdit, RailEdit)
- Ability to persuade for the overall betterment of the railway in situations where individual objectives may conflict
- Exceptional communication skills for multiple audiences with diverse levels of experience;
- Building & maintaining relationships, team player, cross-functionally and strong field contacts are an asset
- Proven ability to deal with conflict and progress solutions.
- May require compiling data records / request outside of normal business hours
- Must possess a valid Class 5 driver’s permit
- Valid passport, ability to travel to US/CAN without restrictions
