Job Description

In cooperation with the Department of Laser Technology at RWTH TOS, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Europe’s leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis. The Data Science and Metrology department at Fraunhofer ILT is involved in the modelling of semiconductor-based beam sources for laser material processing, laser metrology and quantum technologies.

The measurement principle of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR for short) enables precise scanning of the surroundings of an autonomous vehicle by determining the time of flight of a short laser pulse, for example, to measure distance. It therefore represents an important addition to the information provided by RADAR sensors and camera systems. Vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) are particularly suitable as a beam source for LiDAR systems due to their compact design and cost-effective manufacturing processes. The possibility of processing two-dimensional arrays of these lasers with individual addressing allows targeted scanning of the environment with a focus on regions with dynamic changes in distance ratios.

What you will do

  • The extension of our in-house simulation software for laser diodes
  • Implementation of a model to describe the optical properties of a VCSEL with complex heterostructure and current-constricting apertures
  • Coupling the results of these calculations to existing models for electrical transport and temperature distribution
  • Development and evaluation of design concepts for improved semiconductor heterostructures

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree program
  • Interest in semiconductor lasers and autonomous driving
  • Enjoy simulation and programming
  • Initial experience with numerics or the programming language Python is advantageous, but not mandatory

What you can expect

  • Practice-orientated final thesis in an innovative working environment
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
  • Excellent machinery and equipment
  • Exciting and challenging areas of work in applied research
  • Good transport links (bus connection, free multi-storey car park)
  • Flexible working hours that allow you to combine your studies and professional practice

The position is limited until the completion of the thesis.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees’ skills and therefore welcome all applications – regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.
