The Baltimore Banner is a nonprofit digital newsroom dedicated to providing high-quality local journalism to the Baltimore metro area. As the Head of the Banner Analytics and Insights team, you will play a central role in driving data-driven decision making across our organization that connects us to our local audience. You will be leading our strategy in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data from various sources to provide valuable insights and recommendations. Your expertise in data analysis, insights, storytelling, and people leadership skills will be crucial in guiding our organization towards achieving our goals and fulfilling our mission.
Head of Analytics Job Responsibilities:
- Manage and grow Banner’s analytics and insights capabilities, including supervision of direct reports, providing guidance, direction, and support in their day-to-day activities.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive analytics strategy to support the organization’s business and newsroom objectives.
- Collect and analyze data from various sources, including internal systems, third-party tools, and market research, to identify trends, patterns, and opportunities.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define key performance indicators (KPIs) and develop dashboards and reports to track and measure performance against these metrics.
- Provide actionable insights and recommendations to stakeholders based on data analysis, helping them make informed decisions and drive business growth.
- Stay updated with the latest industry trends and advancements in analytics tools and technologies and evaluate their potential to improve our data analysis capabilities.
- Drive data governance initiatives by establishing data quality standards, ensuring data accuracy, and implementing data security measures.
- Collaborate with IT teams to ensure data infrastructure, systems, and tools are optimized to support efficient data collection, storage, and analysis.
- Effectively communicate complex analytical findings and insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders through presentations, reports, and visualizations.
- Foster a culture of data-driven decision making within the organization, promoting the use of analytics to drive continuous improvement and innovation.
Required Skills:
- Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a team.
- Proven experience in data analysis and visualization tools, such as SQL, Excel, Tableau, Power BI, or similar tools.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a strong attention to detail.
- In-depth knowledge of statistical analysis techniques and methodologies.
- Proficiency in data modeling and data manipulation.
- Strong business acumen and the ability to connect data insights to business objectives.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex data into clear and actionable insights.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or Computer Science. A Master’s degree is preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in analytics or a related field. Managerial experience is a plus. Journalism or Digital Media Industry is a plus.
- Proven track record of delivering impactful insights and recommendations based on data analysis.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing analytics strategies in B2C environment would transfer well.
- Strong understanding of data governance principles and practices.
- Familiarity with data visualization best practices and tools.
- Experience working with large datasets and using statistical analysis techniques.
- Knowledge of programming languages such as Python or R is preferred.
- Certification in relevant analytics tools or methodologies is a plus.
