About the Job

The Product Owner Data Science & Machine Learning role is accountable for defining and developing the product roadmap in order to deliver on business and user needs.  The Product Owner will define the vision and lead the experience for their product; driving to lead the market and ensuring a process of ongoing iterative improvement in line with the wider technology strategy.  

The role will require a combination of excellent communication and presentation skills as well as strong technical data modelling/machine learning capability. 

The Product Owner Data Science & Machine role is embedded, and will work day-to-day, within a cross-functional Data and Insight product team. This will include:    

  • Manage and develop the product roadmap for relevant products to deliver on business and user needs including working closely with the Intelligence Labs team to align with both the organisational vision and strategy as well as the enterprise data & analytics strategy.  
  • Ensure product vision is clear, documented, and communicated including collaboration with internal and external stakeholders and responsible for driving buy-in with senior executive team for product roadmap / vision.

  • Work closely with the stable team to ensure they understand the “what” and the “why” in backlog and story prioritisation. Provide backlog management, iteration planning, and elaboration of the user stories 
  • Ensure that product roadmap decisions are based on a ‘test and learn’ approach where feedback from stakeholders is incorporated into future product development cycles. Conduct extensive product research to evaluate competitor activity, strategies and emerging market trends locally and globally.   
  • Coach the machine learning engineer to define, identify and document detailed technical requirements and define best approach to solve business problems (choice of algorithm, etc.) 
  • Active participation in Product Community of practice to support incremental maturity of organisation’s product team capability

About You:

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline

Required experience, understanding or credentials including:

  • Experience of Agile product ownership or related roles such as project management 
  • Extensive expertise in Data Science & Machine Learning or related function
  • Deep experience in building and implementing machine learning models (e.g. Xgboost, Random Forest, Neural Nets)
  • A strong understanding of statistical techniques (e.g. Regression, Clustering, Classification)
  • Experience of Advanced Analytics techniques (e.g. NLP, Next Best Action engines)
  • Excellent process, documentation and writing skills with a keen understanding of data quality and information management principles.  
  • Experience developing product roadmaps and managing feature and user story backlogs. 
  • Product delivery experience with distributed teams and vendor/3rd party partner teams. 
  • Experience in decomposition of initiatives into requirements and solid understanding of both user story mapping as well as customer journey mapping. 
  • Strong analytical skills, including ability to interpret complex business needs and translate into product requirements for technical solutions. 
  • Ability to communicate and engage well with stakeholders at all levels (including senior executives) and be able to present technical solutions in a business context.
  • (desired) Business domain knowledge in superannuation or financial services
