The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) is a living laboratory where we investigate the relationship between computer technology, human activity, and society. Founded in 1993, the HCII is a place where we work to understand and create technology that harmonizes with and improves human capabilities, goals, and social environments through interdisciplinary research and education in design, computer science, and behavioral and social sciences. We research how people work, play, and communicate within groups, organizations, and social structures, then we design, create, and evaluate technologies and tools to support human and social activities.
The CMU SPUD lab is hiring a Research Engineer to join the efforts of the privacy through design initiative: we explore the design space of a tool for AI practitioners, who design and build consumer-facing AI products, to scaffold the critical reflection around privacy risks entailed by the requirement or the capability of AI they intend to build.
The Research Engineer will build upon a taxonomy on privacy in AI that the research team has previously established, and use a large language model (LLM) to create tools that help practitioners contextualize each type of privacy risks to their AI product ideas. The goal is to help practitioners to quickly identify relevant privacy risks and their potential intensity that pertain to their AI product ideas. The system will also allow users to generate contextualized privacy feedback, with the goal to provide practitioners more visualized risks to discuss and perform critical product reflection. You will help front and backend development of the web-based tool itself.
