We are seeking a Senior Behavioral/Decision Scientist to join our Alexandria, VA or Calverton, MD office; however, consideration may be made for working remotely from other US locations. The Senior Behavioral/Decision Scientist is an integral part of our Resilience and Planning Team.

About You:

As a Senior Behavioral/Decision Scientist, you will be able to showcase your technical expertise, project/program delivery skills, and ability to work collaboratively with experts spanning physical and social science disciplines to solve important and impactful real-world problems. You will work closely with various stakeholders to understand their business problems and priorities, formulate data-driven and evidence-based solutions, and communicate actionable insights. You will help us and our clients, make informed and optimal decisions using best-available environmental, engineering, and socioeconomic datasets.

How your experience will contribute to the team:

  • You will take the lead in project-specific teams, using client insights and expectations to guide the design and implementation of data collection, integration, analysis, evaluation, and communication tasks against project objectives.

  • Gather information necessary to understand and fully frame client challenges, goals, competing priorities, and values, and translate that understanding into data, analytics, and other processes and products. You will apply broad knowledge of social and behavioral sciences, spanning decision theory to economics, and blend it with advanced technology and datasets to deliver solutions to diverse problems.

  • Execute job functions leading a small, project-oriented, multidisciplinary team of data science professionals, and be able to support direct interaction with clients within the context of project progress meetings, design reviews, operations, and project production and delivery.

  • Collaborate with industry leaders, managers, engineers, and other decision and data scientists and lead efforts to define and scope decision problems.

  • Apply demonstrated experience combining social and behavioral sciences, analytics, data science, and strategy to help make data-driven decisions.

  • Collect and organize data from many different sources, including structured and unstructured data.

  • Collect, clean, and analyze data from various sources using SQL, Python, R, and others.

  • Understand and apply advanced statistical and machine learning techniques to build predictive models, optimization algorithms, and simulation scenarios.

  • Evaluate the performance, robustness, and trade-offs of different analytical approaches and solutions.

  • Apply experience scoping and developing decision-support tools and derivative products and services.

  • Present and visualize data and insights using dashboards, reports, and presentations.

  • Communicate complex concepts, findings, and recommendations to non-technical audiences in a clear, concise manner and accounting for potential cultural or social sensitivities.

  • Work with team members and leaders to develop a data strategy.

  • Supervise junior data or decision analysts.

  • Performs other such duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.

Role Requirements:

  • BS or BA in sociology, organizational or cognitive psychology, economics, statistics, mathematics or mathematical statistics, or other related degree. MS degree preferred.

  • Minimum 10 since Bachelor’s degree or 9 years since Master’s degree in related experience in decision science including data analytics.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, particularly in the context of client and stakeholder engagement and information gathering.

  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

  • Knowledge and skill in applying analytical and evaluative techniques to the identification, consideration, and resolution of a wide variety of scenarios, including trade-off analysis.

  • Strong skills in research, data discovery, and data development.

  • Diverse and sustained experience in application of statistics, mathematics, and quantitative methods to decision making.

  • Experience in applying statistical and machine learning methods such as regression, classification, clustering, time series, natural language processing, deep learning, etc.

  • Experience in using optimization and simulation tools, such as Gurobi, CPLEX, Simulink, etc.

  • Experience in using data visualization and reporting tools, such as Tableau, Power BI, Looker, etc.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects in a challenging work environment.

  • Ability to work independently and/or on a team.

  • Strong organizational skills.
