Senior Data Engineer
Job Description
Based in Southern California with locations in Malibu, Calabasas and Camarillo; HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art.
General Description:As a Data Engineer on the Data Services team, you will be responsible for working with scientists in HRL’s four laboratories to develop data solutions. This role is responsible for designing and implementing improvements to the ETL pipeline and for ensuring the availability of data for a wide variety of users within HRL.This role is high impact; the services you build and maintain will be an essential part of the function of the Microfabrication Technology Lab and of HRL overall.
Essential Duties:Design, implement, and maintain scalable and reliable data pipelines, ETL processes, and databases to support a variety of data and analytics needs.Provide technical leadership and strategic direction to align data engineering initiatives with business objectives.Design, develop, and deliver data products to production, complying with the data governance and security requirements of our system.Be self-motivated in seeking solutions when the correct path isn’t always knownCollaborate with engineers and researchers in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing data engineering initiatives.Maintain and enforce business contracts with stakeholders on how data should be represented and stored.Stay on top of new technologies to continuously improve our big data architectures and streamline how we deliver value to our end users.Work closely with Data Scientists, SREs, and Product Managers to ensure software is high quality and meets user requirements.Troubleshoot and debug complex data engineering issues, demonstrating strong analytical problem-solving skills.
Required Skills:5+ years of experience working with data at scale, including data engineering, business intelligence, data science, or related field.5+ years of hands-on experience in data management activities such as building data pipelines in Unix-based environments.5+ years of experience using Python.Data pipeline orchestration implementation experience (Airflow DAGs, Kubernetes Helm Charts, Docker Compose files).Significant experience with relational databases and query authoring (SQL Server) in distributed databases.Proven expertise in data modeling, schema design, and database optimization techniques, ensuring efficient and scalable data storage solutions.Strong experience in ETL implementation with Data Lake and Data Warehouse Architectures.Demonstrated ability to implement and enforce data quality standards, data governance practices, and metadata management for maintaining accurate and reliable datasets.Familiarity with DevOps practices and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, utilizing tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, or similar.
Required Education:Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related fieldMaster’s Degree a plus
Compensation:The base salary range for this full-time position is $120,715 – $150,895 + bonus + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
