You’ll be instrumental in building and maintaining a machine learning focused data lake with robust real time data pipelines that fuel our advanced analytics and business insights initiatives. You’ll play a key role in architecting and implementing scalable data solutions using innovative technologies.

Primary Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive data engineering vision and roadmap aligned with business goals.

  • Prioritize data engineering projects to maximize impact on business intelligence and analytics initiatives.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (executives, business analysts, project managers, data scientists) to understand data needs and translate them into technical requirements.

  • Advocate for the value of data engineering as a core driver of data-driven decision making.

Team Management & Mentorship:

  • Lead and mentor data engineers and analysts, fostering a collaborative, impactful environment.

  • Recruit, hire, and onboard versatile data engineering professionals.

  • Set measurable performance goals for team members and provide ongoing feedback for development.

Technical Expertise:

  • Lead the entire data engineering lifecycle, encompassing data collection, modeling, transformation, storage, and delivery.

  • Design and implement robust, scalable data pipelines using powerful data engineering tools and frameworks.

  • Ensure the integrity, security, and availability of data assets within the organization.

  • Stay ahead of industry trends and emerging technologies especially as relates to data engineering for machine learning.

Functional Expertise:

  • Focus forward by bridging business needs with innovative technology solutions.

  • Continuously develop functional and business expertise along the way.

Project Management:

  • Manage data initiatives effectively, defining clear objectives, timelines, and measurable results.

  • Allocate resources and budget effectively for successful project execution.

  • Identify and resolve potential roadblocks, ensuring projects run smoothly and achieve timelines.

  • Communicate project progress and results clearly and concisely to technical and non-technical audiences.

Communication & Collaboration:

  • Partner with stakeholders across departments (finance, business technology, data science) to ensure data pipelines support organizational goals.

  • Foster an inclusive culture of learning and collaboration within the data engineering team.

  • Present advanced technical concepts in a clear and understandable manner to both technical and non-technical audiences.

About You

You’re a data rockstar with more than just technical chops. You’re a problem-solving leader with a collaborative spirit and passionate about your work. Here’s what makes you a perfect fit:

Leadership:

  • A seasoned pro with 12+ years of experience in data engineering, software development, or database administration (large-scale, real-time distributed systems).

  • You’ve demonstrably led and developed teams (architects, data engineers, analysts) for 5+ years.

  • You’ve orchestrated sophisticated data lakehouse, data warehouse, and data mesh implementations using modern ETL/ELT frameworks.

  • You have a talent for encouraging collaboration across all levels (executives, business partners, data scientists) with your strong business knowledge, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Importantly, you’re a mentor who cultivates an inclusive learning environment for your globally diverse team.

Technical Expertise:

  • You’re the authority on data modeling, database design, ETL processes, real-time streaming pipelines, and data warehousing.

  • You’re experienced with innovative technologies like Snowflake and Databricks, comfortable with data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, Sigma), and knowledgeable with cloud services like AWS (or similar platforms).

  • Graph-based data workflows (Apache Airflow), ML DataOps, and the software development process (SDLC) hold no mysteries for you.

Bonus Points:

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field (Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, Business) is a plus.

  • Experience with machine learning projects, MLOps, or similar is the cherry on top!

This role is about more than just technical skills. We’re looking for a passionate leader who thrives on using data to make a real impact. Are you that person?

Our Approach to Flexible Work

With Flex Work, we’re combining the best of both worlds: in-person time and remote. Our approach enables our teams to deepen connections, maintain a strong community, and do their best work. We know that flexibility can take shape in many ways, so rather than a number of required days in-office each week, we simply spend at least half (50%) of our time each quarter in the office or in the field with our customers, prospects, and partners (depending on role). This means you’ll have the freedom to create a flexible schedule that caters to your business, team, and personal needs, while being intentional to make the most of time spent together. Those in our remote “home office” roles also have the opportunity to come together in our offices for important moments that matter.

Are you being referred to one of our roles? If so, ask your connection at Workday about our Employee Referral process!
