Job Description
MEDICAL IMAGING DIRECTOR
Directs the activities of the Medical Imaging Department including managing the staff, daily workflow, patient satisfaction and the quality of care. Collaborates with the Chief Of Medical Imaging, Physicians and staff and ensures that key performance indicators (KPIs) are within the benchmark. Evaluates the delivery of care, maintains equipment and structural components, monitors staff knowledge of emergency care, and manages overall workflow between different sections. Reviews and adjusts the workflow process as needed, maintains accurate medical imaging inventory, checks supplies and patient billing activities, and coordinates annual Performance Improvement Projects. Participates in data collection for enhancing departmental services, ensures staff competency and licensure, promotes a culturally sensitive environment, and encourages teamwork and respect. Focuses on continuous improvement, implementing creative approaches to meet goals and supporting the use of Care Planning and Clinical Pathways.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
PATIENT-CENTERED CARE MANAGEMENT:
- Provides direction and guidance in the delivery of patient care, incorporating outcomes and research evidence to guide practice.
- Provides input in formulating patient standards of care and practice.
- Evaluates the integration of the departmental process: identification of patient problems, implementation of plan of care and evaluation of patient progress toward desired outcomes.
- Collaborates with the medical staff to coordinate medical and nursing management of patient care.
- Supervises all departmental activities related to patient care and monitors compliance for accurate reporting and documentation of all patients’ care and equipment usage.
- Identifies the need for activation of escalation procedures which include notifying management when the demand exceeds capacity.
- Assumes responsibility for infection control, safety and quality of care and comfort of patients.
- Implements and monitors infection control measures.
- Applies safety measures related to patient care.
Operational Management:
- Plans, organizes, and manages daily operations within the approved budget.
- Participates in environmental rounds.
- Follows-up on replenishment’s of instruments.
- Ensures the establishment of responsibilities and identification of priorities and performance standards.
- Oversees the scheduling process and final schedule to be matched with volume trends.
- Facilitates opportunities for nursing and technologists education activities for the use of new equipment and/or technologies.
- Assists nursing and technologists in the development of clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills through case discussions, clinical demonstrations, case reviews, etc.
- Ensures safe handling, and administration of Narcotic/Controlled Drugs and documentation as directed by policies and procedures.
- Ensures optimum fiscal and budgetary management of the specific clinical area. This includes the ability to control lost revenue.
- Ensures a safe working environment through compliance with hospital policies and procedures regarding safety, infection control, and security.
- Promotes principles of evidence-based practice to improve practice.
- Evaluates staff performance based on professional practice standards, relevant studies and regulations, and organizational criteria identifying areas of strength, as well as areas for professional/practice development.
- Fosters a productive and healthy environment by effectively addressing personal issues.
- Investigates all incidents and customer complaints.
- Initiates risk management processes suited to the needs of patients in the unit.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
- Participates in departmental/hospital-wide Performance Improvement (Pl) activities.
Unit Management:
- Assists the Chief Of Medical Imaging in the daily running of the Department by setting up staff work schedule and assigns equitable workload to employees in accordance with established department workflow.
- Handles the technical aspect of the department ensuring that all equipment function properly.
- Oversees and assist section supervisors in setting up, administrative departmental processes, technical protocols and workflows as created by Chief Of Medical Imaging.
- Directs, trains, and monitors technologists in the day-to-day execution of imaging and procedures and techniques, and in the effective and safe operation of facilities, and equipment.
- Plans and implements the overall diagnostic imaging policies, procedures, and services for several departments which may include nuclear medicine, MRI, radiology, computer-assisted tomography and ultrasound.
- Oversees the Scheduling of patients and reports to the Chief Of Medical Imaging of problems related to the delivery of patient care or caseload volume.
- Selects and administers appropriate assessment and diagnostic techniques.
- Applies advanced clinical skills in different modalities with difficult and complex cases.
- Develops, implements and adapts different procedures in different modalities.
- Manages the Department’s inventory (equipment, supplies)
- Deals with patient complaints
- Independently performs all requested CT/MRI/Mammography and X-Ray examinations (if competent) in accordance with hospital and departmental guidelines.
- Performs and/or oversees the performance of department procedures, to include instructing and manipulating patients, selecting techniques and calibrating equipment, and obtaining and developing high quality images.
- Helps to facilitate Technologists in accordance with the established procedures and protocols. Supervises, trains, and monitors technologists in the day-to-day execution of Imaging and associated procedures and techniques, and in the effective and safe operation of facilities, and equipment.
- Schedules patients for Imaging examinations if required.
- Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures and arranges patient priorities to accommodate them in conjunction with Radiologist instructions.
- Reviews the request and previous studies before performing the examination.
- Works closely with the radiologists to cater for all procedural needs and requirements for imaging examinations.
- Maintains section service and equipment as deployed by the Chief Of Medical Imaging
- Observes radiation safety measures / protocols at all times e.g. Checking the LMP in all females of child bearing age , protecting gonadal areas when required
- Observing all safety measures in the specialized areas e.g. MRI safety screening form , checking PTT times etc. available for interventional procedures
- Monitors the consumables and replenish supplies as required
- Monitors the budget and the expenses of the department
- Ensures appropriate staff levels , monitors staff sickness , perform/complete regular staff appraisals arrange and approve on-call rosters and annual leave
- Coordinates departmental monthly meetings. attends hospital –wide committee meetings and disseminates all relevant information to the MID staff
- Coordinates the Departmental Quality Improvement and Education Programs.
- Maintains continuous quality improvement and quality control manuals
- Liaises with reception/administrative and booking staff in the booking and coordination of patient examinations as required.
- Keeps abreast of new developments in the fields and recommends them to the Chief Of Medical Imaging, those that would improve the operation of the service.
- Performs and monitors safety checks on patients, employees and visitors to comply with the safety regulations.
- Problem-solves with in-house IT department and external vendors with respect to RIS and PACS issues.
- Assists in the “start-up” of all new clinics. This includes procedure manuals, policy manuals, protocols, ordering of all supplies, protective wear and machines, etc.
- Assist with follow-up of Incident/Accidents and Patient Complaints when required by Chief Of Medical Imaging.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Radiography/Radiology Technology or Medical Imaging
- Active home country registration
- Dubai Health Authority (DHA) License
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of seven (7) years of clinical experience in the Medical Imaging Department
- Minimum of three (3) years of Managerial/Supervisory Experience in the Medical Imaging Department
- Knowledge of principles, methods, equipment and theory of the practice of different modalities in medical imaging and Radiotherapy department
- Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, pathology and medical terminology
- Knowledge of radiation protection and MRI safety
- Knowledge of Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA)
- Skills in leadership and management
- Ability to speak and write in English fluently
- Private hospital experience preferred

- Responds promptly to the inputs regarding the educational needs of the staff and serves as a resource in meeting those needs. With the support of the supervisor, may support projects within area of clinical expertise.
- Provides mentoring to others when appropriate.
- Oversees the Organization and maintenance of patient caseload consistent with department productivity standards.
- Oversees the Scheduling of patients and reports to the Chief radiologist & Chief Medical Officer of problems related to the delivery of patient care or caseload volume.
- Selects and administers appropriate assessment and diagnostic techniques.

- Maintain the Quality Assurance program.
- Oversees the departmental inventories and supplies.
- Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
- Reviews the request and previous studies before performing the examination.
- Works closely with the radiologists/Oncologist to cater for all procedural needs and requirements for PT’s examinations.
- Maintain section service and equipment as deployed by the Chief Radiologist/Oncologist
- Observes radiation safety measures / protocols at all times e.g. Checking the LMP in all females of child bearing age , protecting gonadal areas when required
- Observing all safety measures in the specialized areas e.g. MRI safety screening form , checking PTT times etc. available for interventional procedures
- Perform any additional duties as required; administration duties assists with filing, clerical and scheduling providing that appropriate training have been given.
- Ensures the staffs clean and tidy rooms at the end of all shifts
- Demonstrates leadership, encourages teamwork by showing initiative , being knowledgeable in all aspects of the daily running and administration of the Department
- Pro-active in the management strategy of the department by anticipating staffing trends and equipment requirements and implementing the necessary action without supervision
- Co-ordinates and initiates section service and equipment maintenance as required consistently ensuring that all preventative maintenance services are completed and recorded. Liaises consistently with company engineers and the Bio-medical Dept
- Facilitates the daily running if the department –
- Monitors the consumables and replenish supplies as required

- Keeps abreast of new developments in the fields and recommends them to the Chief radiologist/Oncologist & Chief Medical Officer, those that would improve the operation of the service.
- Performs and monitors safety checks on patients, employees and visitors to comply with the safety regulations.
- Problem-solves with in-house IT department and external vendors with respect to RIS and PACS issues.
- Assists in the “start-up” of all new clinics. This includes procedure manuals, policy manuals, protocols, ordering of all supplies, protective wear and machines, etc.

- Monitors the service consistently and proposes changes to ensure efficiency of the area and a high quality of service at all times
- Conduct the monthly environmental rounds in the Department.
- Graduate of an accredited School, University, or Institution from where the qualification permits registration with the ARRT or its equivalent.
- Current Registered Licensure in country of citizenship or professional practice.
- Knowledge of JCIA or accreditation standards.
- Knowledge of QI/CQI/PI philosophy
