Job Description

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is one of 27 Institutes and Centers at the National Institutes of Health. NLM is a global leader in biomedical informatics and computational health data science and the world’s largest biomedical library. NLM’s legislative mandate is to support the essential work of acquiring, organizing, preserving, and disseminating biomedical information. NLM provides public access to this information 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Overview:

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) seeks early and second career librarians within five years of graduation interested in advancing equitable and innovative futures for biomedical libraries to participate in a one-year fellowship that fosters the development of librarians seeking to lead in medical or health sciences libraries.

Position Description/Responsibilities:

As a National Library of Medicine Associate Fellow, you will:

  • Participate in projects on user services, collection, open science, artificial intelligence, health data standards, information discovery, scholarly communication, user engagement, archives and training.
  • Grow professionally and learn in a cohort, participating in a formal curriculum taught by staff experts
  • Develop skills in data science (analysis, visualization)
  • Develop foundations for leadership (presenting, network building)
  • Receive support from experienced mentors
  • Attend professional conference, and a one-week practicum at a health sciences library

Position Requirements:

To qualify for the NLM Associate Program, you must:

  • Hold United States Citizenship
  • Reside in the United States
  • Be at least 18 years old by June 30, 2025
  • Have earned an American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master’s degree, by June 30, 2025, or within the previous five years; If you are a student, you must be able to show proof of your degree by June 30, 2025.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Annual stipend of $68,405.00
  • Health Insurance Supplement – The program offers a supplemental health insurance stipend for participants to purchase health insurance through a group health insurance plan via Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
