Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you’re near one), at home or a bit of both, it’s up to you.

About the team
This position sits in the Business Data Platform under the IT Group at Canva. The Information Technology Group’s vision is to maximize the potential of every Canvanaut through world-class technology & service.
The Business Data Platform team aims to enable significant, scalable and sustainable value via data and insights, by building a world-class data platform and empowering Canvanauts with efficient & effective data capabilities. The team will focus on the data platform domain (Finance, People and IT)’s tooling, architecture and roadmap to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, compliance and continuous development of Canva’s Business data platform.
About the role
The goal of the People Analytics Engineer is to scale and support the ongoing development and enhancement of Canva’s people data platform by integrating new data sources from our people systems such as Leave, Hiring, Learning etc, while ensuring the data is reliable, accurate, and consistent. These qualities are foundational to Canva’s reporting needs and internal operations.
You will apply best practices in data ingestion, modelling, and management on a daily basis, helping to maintain and operate a well-defined, high-quality, tested, documented, and code-reviewed data platform. You will work collaboratively with another People Analytics Engineer and the broader People Analytics team (including the People Data Lead and Data Scientist) to understand people data requirements. Your efforts will help deliver value to the People Supergroup through dashboards, insights, reports, and by enabling other systems with relevant data.
This role is vital in ensuring that data across people remains accurate and reliable as it crosses multiple domains, and you’ll contribute to improving data quality at all points in the flow.
What you’d be doing in this role
- Work primarily with SQL and Python to automate and optimise data ingestion and transformation functions that will enable consistency, accuracy and reliability in people-reported data.
- Design and build out semantic data models that support operational, analytical and reporting needs that are primarily sourced from our business systems and internal application platforms.
- Establish and apply data engineering practices to provide clean, consistent and logical data layers in the data warehouse to end users.
- Maintain, operate, and tune data infrastructure (Fivetran, Snowflake, dbt, Looker, Mode Analytics, Census) at scale.
- Develop and maintain infrastructure, tools and scalable data ingestion, access and modelling frameworks to support Canva internal user’s user case of data warehouse.
- Apply data management and governance practices to develop, customise and maintain high levels of data quality. Ensure that data is secure and exposed appropriately to respective groups of users.
- Partner and guide data scientists in efficient and manageable practices to maintain effective data lineage, governance and consistency.
- Collaborate with other business domain analytics engineers and other stakeholders to embed strong data practices in their relevant domains to meet the needs of big company compliance and relevant SOX controls.
You’re probably a match if
- You have at least 3 years of hands-on experience in designing and developing end-to-end cloud data warehouse solutions. Preferable with People/HR data, but not a mandatory requirement.
- You have dimensional data modelling skills specialising in sourcing data from cloud-based ERP, HCM and/or CRM Platforms.
- You are familiar with a wide set of data warehousing principles, including architecture, DataOps methodologies, modelling approaches, performance/optimisation principles, and data management best practices.
- You are familiar with data governance and data management principles, with a track record in applying standardisation across disparate datasets and implementing technical controls on data pipelines.
- You have experience developing dashboards and reporting solutions using BI solutions.
- You have experience with cloud-based technologies Snowflake, dbt, Fivetran or equivalent.
- You are familiar with API tools and Automation platforms.
- Hands-on experience in using CICD tools, PR processes (Github, Jira, Juniper etc.)
- You have curiosity and self-drive to continuously learn new techniques and tools to extract value from data.
- You have good written, verbal communication and collaborative skills, ability to design and build using high-level requirements.
