Who You Are:

The Wildlands team at AI2 is looking for a full-time intern experienced in computer vision, deep learning and passionate about building AI for Earth. On the Wildlands team at AI2,  our goal is to apply machine learning to support wildland fire management and forest health. We are focusing our work on ground-level fuels that are not measurable with satellite technology. Surface fuels are a neglected research area in wildfire research and management – we are taking current low-tech methodology and applying computer vision to greatly amplify the impact. You will design models that help fuel ecologists to measure various parameters to manage forests. You will create computer vision based models to help scientists understand as much of the state of the forests as possible using photographs. You will conduct research to understand the fusion of various types of imagery (Infra-red, visible, Lidar etc.) and the information which can be gathered about wildlands.

We have a beautiful office near Fremont and Lake Union; catered lunches; great pay, smart, friendly and helpful co-workers. Seattle is beautiful, especially in the summer.

Your Next Challenge:

At AI2, you will be working with world-class AI researchers and talented software engineers. We perform team-based, ambitious research, with a mandate to strive for big breakthroughs, not just incremental progress, in an exciting and interactive workplace. All interns are paired with a mentor and will participate directly in AI2’s groundbreaking work.

AI2 Interns will have the opportunity to do the following tasks:

  • Reading the scientific literature to investigate and understand AI research
  • Executing AI research under guidance of the mentor, which may include building AI systems or system components, developing datasets, and/or conducting experiments
  • Meeting with the mentor to discuss research progress and ideas
