Job Description

The mission of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department is to engage students in a teaching and research-intensive environment that supports growth of character, technical skills, critical thinking, and preparation for the profession. Our vision is to be a responsive and supportive community that provides personalized learning and leads premier research while having a positive local-to-global impact. We leverage our urban location in Charlotte to provide students and faculty with unique opportunities in all aspects of Civil and Environmental Engineering, with a particular emphasis on energy and sustainability. The William States Lee College of Engineering (COE) has approximately 4,000 students in five departments. Research awards in the COE represent nearly a third of the university total. The College of Engineering prides itself on its excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, and is home to several interdisciplinary research centers. Description of Work

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.

Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.

Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.

Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Minimum Experience/Education
UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
Expertise in applying large-scale modeling, AI and machine learning in environmental engineering design and decision-making; public health protection; climate change; environmental risk assessment; sustainability; green and resilient infrastructure, and/or other emerging areas of environmental engineering.

The UNC Charlotte Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Environmental Engineering with an anticipated start date of Spring or Fall 2025. Candidates with any of the following areas of expertise are encouraged to apply: Environmental Engineering candidates with expertise in applying large-scale modeling, AI and machine learning in environmental engineering design and decision-making; public health protection; climate change; environmental risk assessment; sustainability; green and resilient infrastructure, and/or other emerging areas of environmental engineering.

Candidates should be committed to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, development of sponsored research programs, supervision of student research, student mentoring, and academic service. Priority will be given to candidates with an excellent research record as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications, potential for success in extramural funding, and a plan for future research that complements existing department strengths. A Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering (or a related field) is required.
