Are you in?Primary PurposeThe Senior Engineer in the Emerging Technologies – Smart Grid team will lead and support the development, evaluation, and deployment of innovative technologies that enhance grid flexibility, resilience, and intelligence.
This role is responsible for driving initiatives from ideation through execution, including system modeling, simulations, and field implementations. The engineer will focus on integrating distributed energy resources (DERs), electric vehicles (EVs), managed charging, microgrids, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and advanced analytics using diverse data streams. The position requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams across engineering, IT, OT, and cybersecurity to support grid modernization and strategic technology roadmaps.
The Senior Engineer will also contribute to pilot project design, industry engagement, and mentoring, while staying at the forefront of regulatory and technological trends shaping the future of the electric grid. Position may be required to work extended hours for coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies. Primary DutiesLead or support smart grid and emerging technology projects (from ideation, scoping, finances, execution), including system modeling, simulation, and field deployments.
Familiarity with technologies such as electric vehicle (EV) integration, Managed Charging, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) concepts, and distributed intelligence applicationsContribute to the design and execution of pilot projects in emerging technologies focused on DER Integration, grid edge innovation using data-driven approaches to improve grid performance and reliability. Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies such as microgrids, battery energy storage systems (BESS), grid forming inverters, and state estimation techniques to enhance grid flexibility and resilience.
Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering teams (distribution planning, DER engg, Distribution automation), Beneficial Electrification, IT, OT, and cybersecurity teams to advance grid modernization, interoperability, and system awareness. Apply data analytics to leverage diverse data streams (e. g.
, AMI, DERMS, SCADA, GIS, and IoT sensors) for grid performance optimization and predictive insights. Stay current with industry trends and regulatory developments to inform strategic planning and technology roadmaps. Support the development of business cases and technical documentation for emerging technology initiatives.
Participates in technical and industry societies and committees, enhance knowledge of new technologies or issues in areas of company interest, make recommendations for business decisions regarding strategy for new technologies and/or engineering techniques and tools.
