Data Analyst

Springer Nature is hiring a , based either in Dordrecht or Shanghai, who will help publishers and others responsible for the management of the Spinger Nature journal portfolio make data-driven decisions about the composition of their editorial boards. Factors like volume of manuscripts may lead to recommendations to increase (or decrease) its size. You will contribute to cost control and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) targets as we seek to diversify our editorial boards across a range of characteristics. This role is part of the Business Intelligence and Change Management department which forms part of the wider Publishing Performance and Intelligence (PP&I) business area.

 

Key tasks:

Design dashboards/reporting that generate insights into the performance of our editorial boards

  • Conceptualize, together with relevant stakeholders, dashboards to monitor performance and identify pain points
  • Fuel Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) conversations by highlighting demographic and geographic gaps in the composition of our editorial boards
  • Drive adoption across the business of metrics for Editorial Board Member (EBM) performance and EBM composition
  • Support data-driven annual board reviews and renewals
  • Work proactively and independently with stakeholders, partners and other analysts to own and execute data analytics projects that blend technical and stakeholders needs

 

Support the creation of a blueprint for ideal board structures

  • Make recommendations on what a ‘good’ editorial board looks like based on the characteristics of high-performing journals
  • Advise and support publishers in transforming editorial boards to deliver the agreed publishing objectives

 

Enhance our reporting infrastructure with thoughtful recommendations

  • Where needed create your own insights from the data available, where possible partner with our Reporting & Insights team to improve upon our reporting infrastructure
  • Recommend metrics, KPI, data definitions and graphical depictions that will help the wider stakeholder community to understand the status of our boards better

 

Key Relationships:

  • Publishers, as primary owners of the SN journals
  • Editors and the editorial engagement team
  • Reviewers and the reviewer engagement team, who play a crucial part in the end-to-end process
  • Our Centre of Excellence, for project management and process optimization

 

 

Experience, skills and qualifications:

 

  • 3-5 years work experience as a data analyst
  • Excellent working knowledge of SQL
  • Experience with ML
  • Understanding of the publication process is a plus
  • Worked with Google Big Query and Looker is a plus
  • Analytical skills & data-oriented
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to formulate concrete actions supported by numerical insights
  • Welcome but not required:
  • Understanding of the scientific process as it pertains to STM publishing
  • Understanding of the needs of authors, referees and external editors 
  • Graduate degree in the sciences or equivalent work experience
