Data Scientist – Analytics I

At the start of analytics career and learning to apply analytics capabilities, principles and playbooks to solve well defined product analytics and business issues and identify opportunities. Close guidance and support provided by manager. After more time in the role showing signs of gaining confidence to pick up larger or less well defined tasks with less support required.

What you will do:

  •  Basic level ability to extract data from multiple data sources and combine into the required datasets for model building or analytics

  • Basic understanding/awareness of probability and how to apply to business problems (eg. AB testing, log regression output). Understands difference between statistically signifiant test readout vs exploratory analysis.

  • Demonstrates begineer level understanding and correct applicaton of descriptive statistics.

  • Is able to evaluate appropriate measurement techniques and design and recommend simple experiments to answer business questions eg. Pre/post, AB, causal impact etc

  • Possesses understanding of common data models, their underlying assumptions, the types of business questions they can best answer, and what data sources would best support the model (i.e. linear and logistic regression).

  • May be unfamiliar initially with the domain but takes the iniative to learn more (i.e. travel, online retail), business objectives, and critical reasoning skills when designing a data project.

  • Follows standard chart principles such as labelling and titling.

  • Displays basic understanding of which charts are appropriate for different data stories

  • Has familiarity with visualisation tools like Tableau and a willingness to upskill.

  • Builds trust and works collaboratively and transparently with stakeholders, under manager guidance. Seeks out analytics teammates for peer reviews, brainstorming and other upskilling

  • Is able to tell a story in a clear and concise way and present insights rather than just data, with manager guidance

  • Articulates solutions, methodologies, and frameworks in a clear and concise way to both technical and non-technical partners but may need guidance from manager / senior peers.

  •  Can write new / understand existing basic SQL queries  (SELECT…FROM…ORDER BY, JOINS, WHERE (AND OR NOT IN), GROUP BY.)

  • Correctly joins data from different  sources to ensure data quality when needed.

  • Posessess strong working knowledge of the most important data sources to their work area. Knows how to find information about new data sources when required and which support channels to go to in order to unblock data issues when they arise

  • Enacts data quality checks for reports, clearly annotates code and seeks peer reviews and advice as needed to ensure high data quality.

  • Capable of automating basic reporting leveraging key EG tools (i.e. CJA, Tableau etc) 

Who are you:

  • 0-1+ years for Bachelors / Masters Graduate (preference for Mathematics or Science degree), OR Industry experience, OR completed data apprentiships/certifications.

  • Demonstrated experience of using data in a previous role ie. using data to build dashboards or reports which have provided insights to their team/stakeholders or built and maintained a data science project/product in production environments.

  • Demonstrable beginner level experience of using Python or SQL for data analysis, structuring, transforming and visualising big data

  • Critical thinking and showing an inquisitive mind

  • Problem solving skills

  • Communication and influencing

  • Able to gather information

  • Statistics skills

  • Experience with SQL, Python, R or similar

  • Basic data visualisation for communicating results to stakeholders of different technical levels
