Position Overview
Novelis is in search of a transformational and experienced Director of Data Science and Insights to steer its advanced analytics team. This pivotal role involves crafting and driving a comprehensive strategy for advanced analytics, aligned with the organization’s goals, and developing a roadmap for implementing innovative analytics and machine learning initiatives. The successful candidate will lead, mentor, and inspire a team of highly skilled data scientists, leads, and managers, and will foster a collaborative and innovative culture. This includes providing technical guidance, recruiting top talent, and ensuring the team’s success through effective people management.
The Director of Data Science and Insights will be responsible for managing demand, ideating valuable use cases aligned with organizational goals, and tracking their progress. They will work closely with cross-functional teams to provide data-driven insights, influence decision-making, and maintain industry connections to keep abreast of emerging trends and technologies. Innovation and creativity in advanced analytics methodologies are key to this role.

Responsibilities & Qualifications
Responsibilities:
The Director of Data Science and Insights will be responsible for the overarching vision, strategy, and implementation of Novelis’ advanced analytics and AI capabilities, focusing on enhancing operations in sales, marketing, and other key business areas globally. This role will lead a diverse team of digital professionals, including Data Engineers, Software Engineers, AI/ML Practitioners, Data Scientists, Project Managers, and Product Leaders. This leader will be responsible for a broad range of strategic and operational functions:
Strategy and Roadmap Development:
- Development and execution of a comprehensive advanced analytics strategy that aligns with Novelis’ broader organizational goals.
- Creation of a detailed roadmap to guide the implementation of advanced analytics, machine learning, and other innovative analytics initiatives.
- Define and own the vision, strategy, and roadmap for implementing AI, data, and analytics solutions in key business regions and manufacturing centers.
- Stay abreast of industry trends and innovative technologies, applying them effectively to enable evolving business models.
People Management and Leadership:
- Lead, mentor, and inspire a team roughly 15 individuals with varying levels of experience, fostering their professional growth.
- Cultivate a collaborative and innovative team culture, encouraging creativity and new ideas.
- Provision of technical guidance and support to the team, ensuring their continuous success.
Demand Management and Ideation:
- Leadership in workshop meetings to ideate and engage the business community.
- Generation of valuable use cases for the organization.
- Collaboration with the finance department to evaluate use cases and align them with organizational goals.
- Regular tracking, monitoring, and reporting on the progress of use cases on a quarterly basis.
Business Advisory and Influence:
- Collaboration with cross-functional teams to understand business objectives and provide data-driven insights.
Industry Connection:
- Maintenance of strong industry connections to stay informed about emerging trends and technologies.
- Presentation of industry trends, best practices, and recommendations to the company’s leadership.
Innovation and Creativity:
- Driving innovation in advanced analytics methodologies and technologies.
- Encouragement of creative problem-solving and the exploration of new analytical approaches.
- Plays an instrumental role in shaping the company’s analytical strategies and fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration within the team.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s or Ph. D in Computer Science, or statistical studies.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in the field of data and analytics, including a minimum of 5 years in a leadership position.
- Leadership Skills:
- Exceptional skills in leading and building teams, with an ability to inspire and motivate a diverse group of data professionals.
- Hands-on management style appropriate for a highly-matrix global and dynamic environment.
- Experience in fostering a positive team culture and promoting a collaborative work environment.
- Demonstrated ability in developing, and leading a strong team.
- Ability to influence decision-making processes through effective communication of analytical findings.
- A collaborative approach with a demonstrable ability to work effectively within a team environment.
- Driven, high-energy, results-oriented, with a relentless pursuit of ambitious, but realistic personal and business goals.
- Industry Knowledge:
- Strong manufacturing domain experience, particularly in process industries, and a consistent track record in applying data sciences in areas like supply chain, finance, procurement, and R&D.
- Ability to apply data sciences for problem-solving within the specific context of manufacturing.
- Technical Proficiency:
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or Java
- Expertise in machine learning, statistical modeling, data visualization, and familiarity with big data technologies and cloud platforms including AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Comprehensive knowledge of data science methodologies, including feature engineering, model evaluation, and deployment.
- Experience with big data technologies and platforms, such as Hadoop and Spark.
- Deep understanding of data management, governance, and data quality principles.
- Excellent knowledge of using tools to automate and link data reports.
- Strategic Execution:
- A consistent track record in developing and implementing data and analytics strategies that effectively drive business outcomes.
- Problem-Solving and Creativity:
- Strong strategic planning and problem-solving abilities, coupled with a creative and innovative approach to leveraging data and analytics.

- Communication Skills:
- Superb communication and presentation abilities, with an interest in translating complex data into understandable and actionable insights for different audiences.

- A solid grasp of business operations, objectives, and challenges, and the capability to align data and analytics initiatives with business goals.

- PhD in applicable area

Novelis’ Global Corporate Headquarters is located in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta Georgia and employs approximately 250 people. It is co-located with Novelis’ North America regional office which employs approximately 225 people.
