Job Description
Wetland Scientist III (Ecologist III)
AECOM is actively seeking an experienced, highly talented Wetland Scientist III (Ecologist III). The primary work location is Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (PA); however, we will consider excellent candidates in any existing office location. The successful candidate will work within an interdisciplinary team-oriented environment that provides career growth opportunities within AECOM’s Environmental Planning and Permitting (EPP) East Mid-Atlantic Team. This position will include performing environmental field assessments and reporting for wetland/stream delineations, invasive and rare, threatened and endangered (T&E) species surveys, as well as wetland mitigation and/or monitoring. This team primarily works on Projects in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Leading/originating Clean Water Act (CWA) Section 404/401 permitting and impact assessment for federal, state, and local permits, including application preparation and coordination with the clients and reviewing agencies.
- Conducting detail and/or technical review of ecological assessment documents, CWA Section 404/401 permitting, or other associated industry reports.
- Assist with task management according to approved scopes of work and delivering quality reports on schedule and within budget.
- Coordinating and leading conversations with various governmental agencies (federal/state/local, etc.).
- Coordinating with AECOM teams such as cultural resources, T&E species experts, civil engineers, and other project support teams.
- Serving as a technical lead for environmental, biological, and other impact assessments.
- Leading stream, wetland, wildlife habitat field assessments and other surveys by supporting and training junior staff.
- Assisting Senior Managers with business development activities, including proposals, pre-qualifications, and relationship building with clients and prospective clients.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Biology, or related field.
- 4 years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
- Valid Driver’s License and as a condition of employment must be able to pass AECOM’s Motor Vehicle Records review.
- Due to the nature of work, US Citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 4+ years of performing wetland delineation and stream assessment in accordance with federal and state regulations.
- ORAM, HHEI, QHEI certificate of training or extensive experience/knowledge to lead these assessments in the field.
- PWS or other relevant certification.
- Proficiency in permit application preparation experience in multiple states in the mid-Atlantic area (i.e., CWA Section 401/404 permits), supporting data collection and review, and preparation of scientific documents including wetland delineations stream assessments, technical reports.
- Experience in performing ecological assessments for natural gas, electric utilities, and/or renewables industries.
- Technical writing experience specifically for siting studies, and/or FERC resource reports, and/or NEPA analysis preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and technical writing.
- Driver’s license with trailer certification; boat transportation/maintenance experience.
- Safety training (i.e., OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hours)
- High degree of self-motivation.
- Ability to lead and manage a field or technical team.
- Excellent and relevant references
- Experience working in a fast-paced consulting environment.
- Excellent communication skills, including both oral and written (writing sample may be required)
- High degree of self-motivation and the ability to work independently with limited supervision, as well as in collaborative team environment.
- Geographic Information System (GIS) background and/or knowledge

- The position will require fieldwork, and the candidate must be able to travel (including overnight).
