Job Description

Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.

Hey, g’day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!

Learning lots about graduate programs and they’re all starting to sound the same? Good thing you’re reading this.

Launchpad is for career starters looking to lay the foundations for a successful, fulfilling and exciting career. Whether you’re fresh out of your studies or looking to make a change early on in your career, we’ve crafted a program that sets you up with the skills you need to be successful at Canva (and beyond!).

Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney, Australia. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. If you call New Zealand home, we have our Auckland co-working space too.

But you have choice in where and how you work. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you’re near one), at home or a bit of both, it’s up to you.

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that’s all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you’ll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

Once you’ve settled in and have a comfortable grasp of the product, environment, and processes, you’ll be given more responsibility and start leveraging your CS foundations — bringing new ideas to the table concerning everything from feature development, process improvement, and product suggestions. Your day to day activities will consist of solution design and hands-on software development – working closely with leads, designers, machine learning engineers and product managers to deliver features and functionality to our customers all over the world.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Working closely with other machine learning engineers, backend engineers, frontend engineers, designers, and product managers to deliver features and experiments to our users
  • Hypothesis-driven development of data and ML-driven features across Canva.
  • Engineering implementation: developing and implementing ML models and features, as well as using third-party APIs and pre-trained models when appropriate.
  • Running offline and online experiments.
  • Investigating and spiking applications of data and ML across the Canva product, considering tradeoffs between different approaches and rapid shipping.
  • Improving the scalability, speed and performance of existing models.
  • Working alongside data specialists, software engineers and product owners to identify business and growth opportunities.

You’re probably a match if

  • You’re early on in your career (think final-year student to two years experience in your chosen field).
  • You are based in Australia or New Zealand and have working rights. Please note, Canva will not be able to sponsor visas and relocate for Early Talent.
  • You have firmly grounded Computing and Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) Fundamentals.
  • You are comfortable working in Python.
  • You have the ability to conceive and translate statistical or machine learning models to practical, scalable solutions.
  • You have the passion to learn and grow as a technologist.
  • You are someone who thrives in a collaborative environment and enjoys working with cross-functional team members.

It would be awesome if you also have:

  • Experience building and deploying machine learning models.
  • Experience with data platforms (e.g. Spark and Hadoop).
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g. Scikit learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • Experience with interactive notebooks for exploration of data and initial prototyping.

We are welcoming applications for Graduate Machine Learning Engineer – ANZ  till 26th of May 2024, only. Following this advertisement closure date, successful applicants will be reached out to directly to proceed to the next step of our Canva Early Talent hiring process.

Here at Canva, we endeavour to respond to every applicant regardless of the outcome, should you not be successful, we will respond to your application within 5 working days after the job closure date.
