Job Description

Location: Tubize, Belgium

Thales people architect solutions at the heart of the defence-security continuum. Interoperable and secure information and telecommunications systems for defence, security, and civil operators, are based upon innovative use of radiocommunications, networks, and cybersecurity. We are ground breaking new digital technologies such as 4G/5G mobile communications, cryptography, cloud computing and big data for use in physical protection systems, and critical information systems.

Thales Belgium SA, Belgium competence center of Thales, is a company located on 2 sites, one in Tubize (near Brussels) and the other one in Herstal (near Liège). Thales Belgium, which employs more than 280 collaborators, is specialized in the design, development and supply of critical information systems for customers in the sectors of Defense, Security (including Cyber) and Aerospace.

Say HI and elevate your career: Internship in Machine Learning at Thales Belgium!

Are you ready to take the next step in your engineering journey? Thales Belgium invites passionate and talented students for an exciting internship in the Innovation Department, where YOU get to choose your area of interest!

1st Internship Topic : Explore capabilities of following machine learning techniques:

a. DRL (Distributional Reinforcement Learning) – with focus on decision support for collaborative combat.

b. Federated Learning and Federated Reinforcement Learning (FRL)

Context:

As part of ongoing work in multi-agent reinforcement learning, we are currently developing algorithms for decision aid in military operations (specifically collaborative combat).

The purpose of this activity is to take this body of knowledge and development to a next level:

  • introducing the probabilistic perspective of an agent’s choice to explore further optimization and impact of the RL models (DRL)
  • tailoring FRL techniques to collaborative combat use cases.

Goal:

Research state-of-the-art DRL and FRL techniques and document applicability and capabilities within decision aid tools, focused on military tactics and collaborative.

2nd Internship Topic : Explore capabilities of federated learning in general and then focus on RL in particular

Context:

The Thales Innovation teams is interested in gathering knowledge and use cases for various machine learning techniques to quickly identify and adapt usability to internal solutions and research and development projects.

Goal:

Research and document state-of-the-art techniques in federated learning and use cases, especially in defence domain.

3rd Internship Topic : Research and develop methodology for assessing AI vs. Human decision-making trustworthiness

Context:

This research is based on pre-existent work centred on reinforcement learning within multi-agent environments for decision aid tools. The proposed challenge is that of designing an effective assessment tool to define trustworthiness levels for AI decision aid in relation to end user requirements and use cases.

Goal:

Research and document military use cases for decision aid tools.

Research and document military decision-making process; user requirements and scenarios in parallel to the reinforcement learning paradigm of agent, action, reward.

Develop methodology for assessing AI decision process in comparison to human decision making.

What You’ll Experience:

Collaborate with seasoned professionals on groundbreaking R&D projects.

Get hands-on with industry-leading tools and technologies in your chosen field.

Participate in innovative brainstorming sessions that encourage your ideas.

Contribute to real-world applications that make a difference globally.

What We Offer:

A unique opportunity with a leading company in aerospace, defense, and secure communication.

Mentoring from experienced engineers dedicated to your growth.

A vibrant and inclusive workplace that celebrates diversity and innovation.

The chance to make a real impact on projects that shape the future.

Who You Are:

A current student pursuing a degree in Data & AI, Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline.

Eager to learn and explore various engineering domains.

A problem-solver with a knack for creativity and teamwork.

Ready to embrace challenges and make meaningful contributions.

How It Works:

After reviewing your application, we will send you a form to fill where you will be able to specify the topic of your choice together with some administrative questions regarding the internship.
