Lead Data Engineer
Job Description
The Lead Data Engineer in the Architecture, Experience, Digital Platforms and Strategy department within Digital Technology is responsible and accountable to lead the design, development, testing, analysis, documentation, implementation, and support of the Enterprise Data Platform processes and related infrastructure. The Lead Data Engineer is also accountable and responsible for the timely data availability and system up-time through support functions and in-depth testing. The Lead Data Engineer works with business stakeholders to elicit, analyze, communicate, and validate requirements for changes to business processes, policies, and information systems. The Lead Data Engineer is a major contributor on the team in leading and establishing best-in-class data engineering practices while delivering technical analysis, design, and guidance of the team.
Essential Functions
Strategy & Planning
- Lead requirement gathering, interpret business requirements and create functional specifications and estimates for large to enterprise efforts.
- Accomplish and review process improvements – Influence program level technical direction and share with others across the group.
- Full software development lifecycle from requirements gathering through deployment in all aspects of Data Warehousing. Includes ETL, data modeling, analytics, and reporting. Program and resolve features that are large and challenging in scope to create high-value business solutions. Work to drive a collaborative environment between business and technology.
Execution & Deployment
- Design components for Data Warehouse technologies both on-prem and cloud environments. Included but not limited to Snowflake, Oracle, ETL, and SQL. Advanced knowledge on the support of various component and configuration items. Direct and lead large and critical design efforts.
- Design and meet project requirements. Set direction for the technical aspects of a project. Ability to understand requirements and interpret those into functional specifications for project efforts that are large and complex. Guide team members as needed in project specifics.
- Mitigate risk to deployment of warehouse solutions to the environment. Understand the impact of code that is introduced into the environment and the impact that it can have on the ecosystem. Advanced knowledge in deployment of solutions and be able to assist others outside of the immediate team.
- Troubleshoot and support code deployment and resolve code concerns for best practices, security, and code styles.
- Preempt code deficiencies.
Operational Management
- Support Agile methodologies by leading in the development of team norms, support agile methodologies, and participate within the Agile community. Share Agile best practices with the program.
- Lead the creation and implementation of high impact internal team process improvement initiatives.
- Coordinate and run meetings to understand requirements for defects, enhancements, and large to enterprise size project efforts.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to team members by ensuring they have a full understanding of efforts needed to solve complex challenges.
- Seek out new and improved ways to enable solutions.
- Work with leadership to evaluate and prove solutions.
- Act as a Subject Matter Expert on multiple capabilities.
- Work with others to set and provide direction for capabilities, build consensus.
Incidental Functions
- Create and hold presentations with senior business users and senior IT leaders.
- Participate in hiring activities by interviewing and ranking while keeping affirmative action and equal opportunity policy at forefront.
- Analyze performance of complex code and design and review analysis and deficiencies
Formal Education & Certification
- Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in a Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Information Technology field of study (e.g., Information Technology, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Computer Systems Management, Mathematics) or equivalent experience.
Knowledge & Experience
- 10+ years of IT experience.
- 8+ years of experience with SQL, (specifically, but not limited to, PostgreSQL, T-SQL, PL/SQL, SNOWSQL).
- 8+ years of experience with building applications, system integrations, and web services.
- 5+ years of experience with server-side scripting and programming in a Linux environment (primarily bash shell)
- Advanced understanding of common database (Oracle, Snowflake) technologies including performance, tuning, and optimization.
- Advanced data manipulation skills and experience with on-prem and cloud-based data warehouse ETL tools and processes such as Oracle Data Integrator, Fivetran/HVR, or Informatica Data Management Cloud.
- Understanding of design, planning, management, maintenance, and support of Cloud Technologies such as Azure, ASW, GCP, and Snowflake. Preferred but not required.
- General understanding of Business Intelligence Tools (MicroStrategy, Tableau).

This position has a hybrid work schedule with three days in the office and the option for working remotely two days.
