Lead Data Scientist

Salary: National £40,000 – £60,000 / London £50,000 – £70,000

Do you have an inquisitive mind?  Do you love solving problems or identifying potential opportunities?  Do you enjoy finding patterns in data that describe real world scenarios?  This role is perfect for someone looking to work with business stakeholders to use data and data science techniques to help make better decisions for our customers and business.  The role would suit someone who has a strong grounding in analytical principles and data use, but also enjoys leading change and making a difference to the performance of our business.

A bit about the job:

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our high-profile data science team which is helping to shape the future of insurance through cutting-edge analytics. The insurance industry is evolving in an age of rapid technological development, and as an organisation Aviva are investing in strengthening machine learning and analytics as a distinctive capability. The team is recognised as a centre of excellence in our Global Data Science Department – providing new data-driven insights that improve decision making across the Aviva Group.

You’ll be working with internal and external stakeholders to understand business problems and then define, scope and deliver solutions utilising the latest data science techniques in conjunction with the wealth of our data assets. You will have license to be creative in researching and designing solutions, leading your team to explore new and innovative ways of generating value from data and presenting findings back to your stakeholders to be actioned.

Skills and experience we’re looking for:

  • Creative thinker/problem solver with strong analytical and numerical ability.

  • Relevant experience of solving complex problems using data science, including either statistical modelling or using a programming language such as Python, SQL, R or C++ or similar.

  • Experience in leading others to solve complex business problems.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to present to non-technical audiences.

  • Organised self-starter, with drive and commitment.

  • Starting salary: £40,000 – £60,000 National or £50,000 – £70,000 London (depending on location, skills, experience, and qualifications)
