Job Description

Description

The Arabian Center for Environmental and Climate Sciences (ACCESS) is building an environmental monitoring system for the UAE based on autonomous land and marine sensors, as well as periodic manned observation campaigns. ACCESS is also developing and running high-resolution ocean, atmospheric, and climate models for the Gulf region. These activities are generating large amounts of data that needs to be archived, analyzed, visualized, and made available to scientists both in the UAE and abroad, as well as, in part, to the general public.

Principal Responsibilities

The successful candidate will assist in:

  • Developing web-based visualization and archival tools for the scientific data produced by ACCESS.
  • Develop software tools that retrieve and archive without human intervention the data gathered by the autonomous sensors deployed by ACCESS.
  • Analyze data from multiple sources (both models and sensors) with a variety of mathematical and statistical techniques.

The successful candidate is expected to take the lead in at least one of these activities

The candidate will also work on individualized research projects under the supervision of the faculty during the duration of his/her tenure.

This position is supervised by Dr. Francesco Paparella

Qualifications

The successful applicant is expected to be extremely fluent in the Python programming language and to have substantial experience in the field of data science, broadly intended. A basic understanding of web programming is necessary. An undergraduate degree in computer science or computer engineering is ideal, but candidates with any STEM degree may also be successful if they demonstrate the required computer science skills. In all cases, a strong mathematical background is required, as well as aptitude for scientific computations. The successful applicant must also show a strong interest in environmental sciences, the capacity to work well in teams, and a personal commitment to the success of the project.

Preferred experience

Direct experience with the Linux operating system is highly desirable. Most of the work will involve the use (directly or remotely) of systems running Linux, ranging from tiny single-board computers, to NYUAD’s supercomputer.

Highly valuable is a provable experience in any of the following:

  • Web programming (in particular developing dashboards and data visualization interfaces).
  • Embedded computing and electronics.
  • Scientific computing on HPC systems.
  • Data analysis / data mining.
  • Machine learning / deep learning.
  • Image processing, especially for images acquired by UAV platforms.

Although this is not primarily a field position, the willingness to join ACCESS technicians and researchers on field trips aimed at gathering data is highly desirable.

Application Instructions

1. Statement of interest in the position

2. Transcript of degree(s)

3. CV

4. Two letters of recommendation (Names and contact information for at least two people willing to provide letters of recommendation)
