ASML
Physics | Mathematics Internship: Vacuum System Machine Data Analysis
Job Description
Introduction to the job
Are you a bachelors or masters student in Applied Physics, Mathematics, or Data Science and looking for an challenging assignment? Then this internship might be for you!
Background information
The Machine Conditioning Defectivity & OLT department develops and implements solutions to protect the optical column, reticles and wafers within the scanner. Solutions we develop are applied across the ASML portfolio, securing the EUV optics lifetime (OLT) preventing particle contamination on production wafers and reticles.
The vacuum architecture group is part of the Machine Conditioning Defectivity & OLT Solutions department. This group has the knowledge to specify, model, design and test gas flow-systems and their behavior under sub-atmospheric conditions in the EUV scanner.
Your assignment
Vacuum infrastructure of EUV scanners is a complex system consisting of number of interdependent modules. These modules deliver required pressure and flow conditions to enable functions necessary for operation of EUV machines.
Vacuum conditions and hardware are monitored by a network of sensors to operate in a specified range. Analysis of the sensor data gathered from a large set of machines can be utilized to implement methods of statistical process control. These methods can be applied to support development of more mature product by reducing machine-to-machine variation, discovering new failure modes, and identifying trends in production.
The goal of this internship is to:
- Build software tooling to integrate statistical process control of vacuum systems machine data and signals.
- The first part will focus on analysis of fleet data, testing and design of statistical rules based on data distributions and time behavior. In collaboration with corresponding hardware owners, outliers and trends will be linked to possible failure modes and physical processes.
- A second part focuses on creating dashboards and automation of statistical process evaluation that will be used for real-time SPC monitoring (single- and/or multi-variate).
Your profile
To be a great match for this role, ideally you are:
- Bachelor student looking for a graduation internship or a master student looking for an apprentice internship;
- Are pursuing technical education in Applied Mathematics, Data Science, (Applied) Physics or comparable);
- Proficiency in Python scripting, MATLAB programming, and statistics;
- A team player, have creative mindset, complimented with can-do attitude, and strong analytical skills.
- Fluent in English both verbal and in written.
Other requirements you need to meet:
- This assignment duration is for minimum 6 months starting in September 2024.
- Working for full time of 40 hours per week (5 days).
- You are enrolled at a higher education institution for the entire duration of the internship.
- You need to be located in the Netherlands to be perform your internship. In case you ‘re currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, please include in your CV/motivation letter willingness to relocate.

Change the world – one nanometer at a time
Become an intern at a Dutch company that’s a global industry leader. You’ll gain valuable experience in a highly innovative environment – one that sparks your imagination and creativity. In addition to a monthly internship allowance of maximum €600 (plus a housing and free public transport), you’ll get practical guidance from experts in the field and the chance to work in and experience a dynamic team environment.
ASML: be part of progress
ASML is a high-tech company headquartered in the Netherlands. We manufacture the complex lithography machines that chipmakers use to produce integrated circuits, or computer chips. What we do is at the heart of all the electronic devices that keep us informed, entertained, and connected. Every day, you use electronics that simply wouldn’t exist without our machines.
Behind ASML’s innovations are engineers who think ahead. The people who work at our company include some of the most creative minds in physics, electrical engineering, mathematics, chemistry, mechatronics, optics, mechanical engineering, and computer science and software engineering.
We believe we can always do better. We believe the winning idea can come from anyone. We love what we do – not because it’s easy, but because it’s hard.
Students: getting ready for real-world R&D
We’re a global team of about 39,000 people of 140 different nationalities and counting. Headquartered in Europe’s top tech hub, the Brainport Eindhoven region in the Netherlands, our operations are spread across Europe, Asia and the US.
In such an environment, your colleagues may be sitting next door, or they could be thousands of kilometers away in a different country – or even working for a different company.
An internship at ASML is the opportunity to get to know not only the world of industrial-strength R&D, but yourself – you’ll discover just what excites you most. Will you design a part of the machine, or make sure it gets built to the tightest possible specifications? Will you write software that drives the system to its best performance, or work side-by-side with the engineers of our customers in a fab, optimizing a system to the requirements of the customer?
How will you be part of progress
