The successful candidate will contribute to the group’s broad physics program, which includes precision Higgs and Standard Model measurements, and searches for new physics and performance studies. Candidates with experience in modern AI/ML methods—such as transformer architectures, tokenization strategies, and embeddings—are especially encouraged to apply. The ANL ATLAS group maintains strong involvement across the experiment, including detector operations, TDAQ upgrades, Software and Computing, ML development, and High-Performance Computing (HPC). The postdoctoral researcher will have opportunities to engage in these areas in support of physics goals. Key responsibilities Lead and contribute to ATLAS physics analyses Develop and apply AI/ML techniques (e.g., transformer-based models, tokenization, embeddings) to HEP analysis Communicate results internally and externally through talks, notes, and publications Position Requirements Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (within the last 0-5 years) in field of High Energy Physics Demonstrated excellence in physics analysis, including data analysis, statistical interpretation, and results dissemination Strong general knowledge of contemporary high-energy physics and mathematical methods relevant to physics applications Effective verbal and written communication skills Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork Preferred qualifications Hands-on AI/ML experience, particularly with transformer-based models and related techniques (tokenization, embeddings) Familiarity with large-scale software and computing environments, including HPC workflows, is a plus Complete applications must include: Curriculum vitae A description of research interests Arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to [email protected] We will review all completed applications as they are received and will continue until the position is filled.
