A Day in the LifeAt Medtronic, we’re harnessing the power of machine learning (ML) to solve complex problems and create cutting-edge solutions. We’re seeking a passionate Principal Data Engineer to join our team and lead the design, development, and implementation of complex data solutions that transform raw data into actionable insights.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Collaborate with data scientists, business analysts, and stakeholders to understand data needs and translate them into efficient and reliable Big Data pipelines.
  • Design and develop end-to-end data solutions, encompassing data ingestion, transformation, warehousing, and delivery, with a focus on Big Data technologies.
  • Utilize strong programming skills (Python, Java, etc.) to write clean and maintainable code for distributed data processing tasks.
  • Leverage data wrangling libraries like Pandas and Spark to manipulate and prepare Big Data for analysis.
  • Possess deep expertise in SQL (Oracle/SQL Server) and NoSQL databases (Big Data) to manage and query data efficiently at scale.
  • Design and implement Big Data pipelines on cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Snowflake for scalability and cost-effectiveness, leveraging services like S3, Blob Storage, or Data Lake Storage.
  • Orchestrate data pipelines using tools like Airflow to ensure smooth data flow, automation, and handling of large datasets.
  • Utilize your experience with Apache Spark and PySpark to distribute data processing tasks across clusters and optimize performance for Big Data workloads.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot data pipelines to ensure data quality, consistency, and timely delivery, even with large datasets.
  • Champion best practices for Big Data engineering and maintain a high standard of code documentation.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest advancements in Big Data tools and technologies like Spark and PySpark.
  • Mentor and guide junior data engineers within the team.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • Bachelors / Master’s of Engineering in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • 14+ years of experience in data engineering with a proven track record of successful Big Data pipeline development.
  • Strong programming skills in languages like Python (with experience in PySpark) or Java for data manipulation and analysis.
  • In-depth experience with data wrangling libraries like Pandas and Spark for Big Data preparation.
  • Expertise in SQL (Oracle/SQL Server) and NoSQL databases (Big Data) for data storage and retrieval at scale.
  • Familiarity with data pipeline orchestration tools like Airflow or similar solutions.
  • Experience designing and implementing end-to-end data solutions, from data ingestion to consumption, specifically for Big Data.
  • Strong understanding of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Snowflake) for Big Data storage, processing, and services.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills with a passion for building efficient Big Data infrastructures.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with real-time data processing frameworks (Apache Kafka, Apache Flink).
  • Experience with data governance and data security best practices.
  • Experience with data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI) for data exploration.
  • Experience with DevOps practices for continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) of data pipelines.
