Job Title: Product Development Research Engineer
User Insights, Preferences, and Human Factors Engineering
Location: New Brunswick, NJ, Summit, NJ
Department: Devices, Delivery, and Product Strategy
Job Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated Product Development Engineer to join our dynamic Devices, Delivery, and Product Strategy team. This role will focus on user insights, preferences, and human factors engineering to enhance product design and development. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in biosciences, pharmaceutical science, or engineering, with experience designing, conducting, and reporting on healthcare related research involving human subjects.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct research with Patients/HCPs to identify insights/opportunities/inputs (STEM, clinical, patient, user, business, analytics) and translate them into product requirements.
- Support human factors activities throughout the product design and development cycle, adhering to regulations and industry standards.
- Partner with internal teams within Commercial, Clinical, Regulatory, and Product Development to define product strategy/roadmap based on user insights and preferences.
- Work closely with product development (ex. formulation, packaging, etc.) and device teams throughout the development process conduct technology landscape assessments, evaluate and benchmark competitive products and trends, and define key attributes and product requirements relating to customers and patients.
- Build end-user-models that translate into the technical requirements, ultimately reducing or eliminating individual prototype testing.
- Support the development of a strong external and internal customer, patient, and key opinion leader network to inform product strategy and advance technology development and innovation.
Assess new technologies, identify trends, and perform research to meet end-user needs. - Support and maintain internal processes for market research and human factors engineering.
- Conduct independent scientific literature reviews and database research to support Product Development.
- Foster an environment of creativity and innovation.
- Serve as a mentor to junior associates in the group and perform other job-related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- BS, MS, or PhD degree in biosciences, pharmaceutical science, engineering (mechanical, biomedical, chemical) with 9 years (BS), 6 years (MS), or 2-4 years (PhD) of experience in the medical healthcare field.
- MS degree in a business management field is a plus.
- Understanding of design thinking in early technology and concept development with the ability to translate insights to action for a physical product (drug formulation, packaging, and/or devices).
- Experience with study design and equipment, research techniques (Discrete Choice, BASES, Conjoint, and/or Max Diff/Kano), and data analysis tools (Tableau, Shiny, R, Python, MATLAB, JMP, IBM SPSS preferred).
- Technical knowledge in drug delivery device technologies, drug product development, market analysis.
- Familiarity with industry trends, market dynamics, and state-of-the-art methodologies towards conducting product research related to medical devices and pharmaceutical development.
- Ability to strategically frame complex opportunities into manageable elements and convince cross-functional leaders of its merit and approach.
- Strong communication skills and experience presenting to senior leaders.
- Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Self-motivated with excellent interpersonal skills.
