Quantitative Analyst (Calgary, Alberta)

BASIC PURPOSE: This position will support Musket Energy Canada, ULC and will be based out of Alberta, Calgary. This role will focus on the development and implementation of pricing models, conducting market and signal research, development of analytical trading tools, and generating insights to drive trading decision-making and strategy.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement advanced quantitative models and programing skills to analyze the crude market markets, including price movements, volatility, and correlations.
- Collect, clean, and manage large datasets from various sources, ensuring data accuracy and relevance for analysis.
- Collaborate with analytics team and traders to develop signals and refine trading strategies
- Conduct research and statistical analyses, develop pipeline flows, inventory balances, arb economics both via pipeline, waterborne and other transportation methods
- Understanding of developing and research fundamental sourced data
- Build and Develop crude oil balanced for US and Canada including regional basis incorporated with global modeling
- Maintain and improve Condensate Equalization modeling to better evaluate pipeline economics
- Develop Refinery input/ output modeling including LP modeling.
- Conceptualize valuation strategies, develop and continuously improve mathematical models, and translate algorithms into code
- Other duties assigned as needed.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field required.
Experience:
- Advanced training in mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science, or another highly quantitative field required.
- Proficiency in probability statistics (e.g. time-series analysis, machine learning, pattern recognition, NLP)
- Hands on programming experience required
- Background demonstrating strong analytical problem solving skills
- 2 or more years in commodities trading space (front or mid-office)
- Quant Finance skills (including theoretical and practical knowledge of financial and real options)
- Proficiency in creating and using algorithms to meticulously investigate and work through large data or error checking problems
- Prior experience working in a data driven research environment preferred
SKILLS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Skills:
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R. Strong knowledge of statistical analysis, machine learning techniques, and data visualization
- Deep understanding and knowledge of market fundamentals within Canadian Crude Oil
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex data and develop actionable insights.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner.
- Strong research skills, preference for research applied to large financial data sets.
- A general understanding of optimization theory, linear / non-linear models, machine learning techniques and various financial models (Risk models & T-Cost models) is a plus.
- Ability to think independently and be an excellent problem solver. The position is well suited for an entrepreneurial spirit.
- Detail oriented, hard working and able to adapt to all potential tasks that might be represented
