Job Description:

Role Summary:

Join a team that is transforming data and analytics at Sun Life Financial (SLF) Canada.  Sun Life’s Client Experience Office (CXO) Analytics area is aggressively enhancing its member insights capability with new tools, and most importantly, new talent.  As a member of the CXO Analytics team, you will play a pivotal role in working closely with our business partners to enable digital engagement, understand our client needs in new ways, and ultimately enable a leading client experience.  As Sr. Data Engineer, you will leverage our vast data and Big Data capabilities to enable these objectives by ensuring there is a solid data foundation in place to support data mining, strategic insight and digital capability enablement.  In joining CXO Analytics, you will be part of one of the fastest growing areas of our business, representing the future of our business and our industry.

This is a fixed term role for approximately one year , that offers partial benefits and vacation.

Reporting to the Manager of Data Engineering, the role requires an experienced data engineer with deep experience in data management and a solid understanding of the data needs of marketing, campaigns and business.   The candidate must have relevant experience in the following areas:

  • Knowledge on the data needs for analytics and campaigns

  • Communication and liaison experience between business, analytics and IT

  • Data discovery – i.e. scoping new data sources, understanding and leveraging current data sources

     

What will you do?

  • Design, develop, maintain and continuously improve a large and complex data repository that provides accurate and reliable data to support campaigns and reporting in support of digital channels.

  • Deepen the organizations understanding of client and member level data and provide expert guidance on how best to leverage data to provide actionable business insight.

  • Build data assets as required for best use of client data for automated digital marketing activity.

  • Manage and execute on business data requests ensuring requests are aligned to business priorities and the request fulfillment meets the business needs.

  • Collaborates in an agile team to understand business objectives and develop campaign solutions that deliver best in class, engaging and highly relevant experiences

  • Provide expert guidance on developing the structure and processes to build a Big Data repository (includes basic ETL type processes, QA etc.).

  • Become one of the organizations top data experts and CXO Analytics data steward ensuring data is appropriately interpreted and applied to business problems.

  • Develop a solid understanding the Sun Life Financial Canada’s business

What do you need to succeed?

  • 3-5 years hands-on experience working on AWS technologies for data processing and analytics 

  • 2+ years experience with AWS Glue for ETL

  • 3 years experience in Python, Pyspark and SQL

  • 5 years hands-on experience with relational database systems, relational models, dimensional models etc.

  • Sound understanding of data management principles (data warehousing, data quality, master data management, etc.)

  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral), combined with strong interpersonal skills – have the ability to explain complexity of data to a business audience

  • Demonstrated experience in database querying and reporting and developing campaign lists for direct marketing campaigns

  • Adaptable – maintains effectiveness while managing competing demands, able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events

  • Organized, takes ownership to meet deadlines and commitments

  • Agile team members demonstrate strong past indicators to:

    • Maintain an ownership mentality

    • Quickly make decisions to accelerate production

    • Drive execution from ideation, to development, through to execution

    • Collaborate with teammates to provide insight to business problems

    • Advocate for the client, leveraging insights that can drive meaningful marketing tactics  

Education and Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or equivalent

Unique Requirements

  • The candidate selected for this role is required to attain Canadian Reliability Security Clearance (administered by submitting fingerprints to the RCMP, who then conduct min. 5 year history checks)

What will be nice to have?

  • Direct marketing experience

  • Strong understanding of Agile methodologies and project management tools like Jira and Confluence.

  • Proficiency in Git, Bitbucket, PYSPARK, Python and conducting code reviews.

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities, with a proactive approach to challenges.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in AWS services, particularly S3 and Lambda, and their configuration for building scalable solutions.  Understand policies and encryption methods to ensure data security.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
