About the role
We are seeking an experienced Data Storage Reliability Engineer to join our team. As part of the team, you will apply Site Reliability and Software Engineering practices towards keeping our critical databases and data storage systems running smoothly. Data Reliability Engineers will partner closely with our service development and infrastructure teams to:
- Understand their workloads and provide subject matter expertise to successfully optimize our usage of data technologies towards performance and reliability.
- Help plan and safely apply database changes, updates, and new use cases.
- Continuously improve our observability and detection capabilities.
- Play a crucial role in incident response and resolution of data-related issues working to minimize customer impact and prevent future issues.
- Automate manual tasks and reduce the amount of human intervention needed in the normal operations of our databases.
- Plan and implement strategies to improve the performance, scalability, resilience, and efficiency of our databases and related systems.
About the Team
At Crunchyroll, our platforms and infrastructure form the foundation on which our services are built and directly influence our customer experience and velocity of our engineers. The Cloud Reliability team at Crunchyroll embeds with our development teams and partners with our core platform teams to deliver the critical cloud infrastructure that enable our services.
About you
- 8+ years of total experience running high volume customer facing services in production.
- 6+ years of experience running production databases and data storage systems on AWS including RDS (MariaDB), DynamoDB, ElastiCache (Redis), S3, and OpenSearch.
- Experienced in capacity planning, debugging complex issues, and optimizing performance.
- BS Degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- Proficient in at least one programming language (JavaScript or TypeScript preferred) with experience in a software engineering role.
- Passionate about data storage technologies and picking the right technology for the use case.
- Expert in improving database stability and observability Works proactively with others to establish SLOs, standards, and best practices.
- Able to work on tasks and projects independently and as part of a team with effective communication skills. Has a history of successfully partnering with other engineering teams.
- Writes clear and concise documentation.
- Acts with urgency, ownership, and with a mindset of continuous improvement.
- Able to participate in an on-call rotation to ensure issues are resolved as quickly as possible and prevented from further occurrence.
- Interested in mentoring or teaching others.
- Experienced in GitOps practices and automation (CI/CD, IaC, etc).

The Pay Range for this position is listed. Actual pay will vary based on factors including, but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Crunchyroll’s Total Rewards offerings for employees. Other rewards may include performance bonuses, employer matched retirement savings, time-off programs, and progressive health benefits and perks.Pay Transparency – San Francisco, CA$160,000—$200,000 USD
