Senior Engineer, Database Administration
Job Description
Overview
We are looking for a Database Engineer who will craft and detail the strategies for backup and recovery, carry out performance analysis, provide data management and user and developer assistance, and also be a point of escalation for first line support. The job holder will provide production and development support for Sybase databases.
Key Responsibilities
– Develop and maintain standards for database builds, database security, patching, high availability and disaster recovery.
– Monitor and configure database resources to ensure optimum performance.
– Handle database procedures such as backup/restore and database version upgrades.
– Undertake maintenance and upgrade tasks, generally out of normal business hours including weekends.
– Provide database design support to development projects.
– Undertake database performance tuning and diagnostics.
– Assist Unix administrators as necessary to support applications that use our databases.
– Provide support shift cover and be available for on-call service.
– Seek and implement opportunities for automating manual database management tasks.
– Evaluate and implement strategies to align to IT security policies.
Essential Skills
– Experience of supporting business critical applications in a multi data center environment.
– Sybase ASE 15.0.3 – 16.0.
– Sybase IQ 15.3 – 16.1.
– Sybase Replication Server.
– Sybase Direct Connect.
– Database Infrastructure installs, upgrades and patching.
– Sybase high availability and disaster recovery strategies.
– Experience of one other database technology among PostgreSQL, SQL Server and Oracle.
– Experience of supporting databases in a Cloud environment.
Nice to have
– Familiarity with monitoring and administrative tools: Delphix, Whitesands, Geneos, Datadog.
– Understanding of ITIL Service Framework.
– Shell Scripting and ISQL.
