About the Position:

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Senior Research Associate. This position is an essential member in ensuring the successful start-up and operation of Applied SystemsLaboratory) (ASL). Crucial elements include the designs and supports of research projects. Performing development, verification and validation of machine learning and associated models. Analyzes and presents data, including the use of advanced visualization methods. They will function as the day-day manager (with oversight from Dr. Berg), including co-supervision of students, postdocs and less senior researchers. This position involves significant responsibility for ensuring the successful development of the ASL and lab environment, including safe operations and procedure compliance including data, cyber and physical security.

Responsibilities:

The role involves a broad spectrum of responsibilities, merging innovative research methodologies with advanced technology application and leadership in high-consequence domains. The successful candidate will support some or all of the following depending on skills and experience.

  • Exercises independent judgment in planning, design, conduct, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of research and development; as necessary, makes changes to experiments.
  • Plays leadership role in conceptualization and implementation of simulation engineering and supports the setup and expansion of ASL and SADIE
  • Works largely independently but also collaborates with other researchers and staff within the lab and partner organizations
  • Conduct research and technology application development machine learning/AI and digital twins for a wide variety of areas including healthcare , industrial, and scientific applications and manufacturing.
  • Confers with the PI in developing and executing research projects, plans and is instrumental in developing tools and techniques.
  • Develops complex systems from modeling individuals in an organization, health policy, and the study of microbiomes, architectures, software engineering (programming), database interface development. Experience in working with both large data sets and models with scarce data
  • Conduct research and technology application related to the development of computer simulations for complex processes and operations
  • Leadership in conceptualization and implementation of simulation engineering and support the setup and expansion of the SADIE Lab
  • Use of computer simulations and modeling, and augmented reality/virtual reality for predictive analytics and “what-if” scenarios
  • Development of machine learning/AI models with applications including healthcare, manufacturing, and maintenance.
  • Develops manuscripts for their own and ASL’s research efforts and is instrumental in preparing, coordinating, and writing manuscripts, publications, grant proposals and presentations .

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and/or directs the work of students, postdocs and less senior researchers
  • Provides oversight of lab equipment, servers, workstations, and software inventory
  • Responsible for overseeing the lab computing infrastructure. Serves as a primary expert on the integration of computing operations of the lab.
  • This position has significant responsibility for the lab environment with responsibility for lab operations safety and compliance.
  • This position has major responsibility for planning and reporting project status and accomplishments. Prepares project reports.
  • Prepares publications and presentations
  • This position is essential serving as an interface with sponsors, potential sponsors, partners, staff, student and administrators including making presentations, doing demonstrations, contributes to meetings and serve as a surrogate for the department head, if they were unable to attend.
  • Publish in top journals and present at conferences.

Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in developing computer simulations in the previously mentioned domains (i.e. agent-based modeling, discrete event simulation, etc.) OR experience in working in computing intensive environments
  • Familiarity with simulation software (e.g. AnyLogic, ExtendSim, MatLab, Arena, FlexSim, NetLogo, Vensim, or Wolfram). Experience in computer programming (Java or other suitable computer language.)
  • Prior experience working with data bases
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively in a team environment with faculty and students.

Required Experience:

  • PhD in Industrial/Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Data Analytics or another field such as information sciences, statistics, AI and machine learning (Masters Degree with 1 year of experience in the above fields could substitute for a PhD)

  • Familiarity with simulation software (e.g. AnyLogic, ExtendSim, MatLab, Arena, FlexSim, NetLogo, Vensim, or Wolfram). Experience in computer programming (Java or other suitable computer language.)
  • Prior experience working with data bases
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively in a team environment with faculty and students.

Preferred Experience:

  • Working in collaborative environments with prior work history. Experience developing machine learning/AI models and/or digital twins.

Duration and Compensation:

This is a full-time, fixed-term position. The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience and qualifications.
