Job Description

SSAI seeks a dynamic Senior Research/Data Scientist to lead Flux Data Product Development. The position involves organizing monthly meetings to coordinate activity and track progress in flux data processing and flux product generation between the science teams. Integration of observations of meteorology, radiation, and soil properties during flux processing. Managing the data flows between ARM and AmeriFlux to ensure timely release of data products. Working to develop storage calculations and corrections for flux products. Identifying additional quality control and modifications to data processing to improve data products and coordinate the release of re-processed datasets and versioning. Coordinating the release of provisional and versioned data products to the community.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in the Earth, atmospheric, environmental sciences, land-atmosphere interactions, forestry, computer science, or related fields, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A background in the deployment, operation, processing, analyzing and/or using of eddy covariance and micro-meteorology measurements to quantify ecosystem fluxes and within-canopy microclimates
  • Experience with measuring or modeling land-atmosphere interactions
  • Expertise in programming in Python, R, Julia, or C/C++ or similar languages
  • Experience working in high-performance computing environments
  • Background in statistical modeling and/or machine learning is desirable
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Proven track record of presenting research at conferences

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with DOE ARM data and measurements
  • Experience with the use of the DOE ARM Data Center and API
  • Experience with Fortran
  • Experience with cloud computing
  • Machine learning expertise and experience with specific applications in the Earth and atmospheric sciences
  • Experience running eddy covariance flux towers
  • A background in aerosol science
  • A background in environmental monitoring instrument design, fabrication and deployment
