YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This role encompasses end-to-end invention of novel genetic traits for soybean, corn and other crops utilizing genome editing and based on desirable product concepts, requiring expertise in molecular genetics and data science as well as project management capabilities and proven ability to accomplish scientific aims through robust teamwork. You will work in a system of diverse and empowered teams to contribute to our mission of Health for All and Hunger for None.
The primary responsibilities of this role, Trait Scientist, are to:
- Design, conduct, and interpret crop genome editing controlled environment and field studies;
- Design, conduct, and interpret crop genome editing functional genomic and molecular analyses that support target identification and characterization, including RNAseq, copy number variation, SNPs, and indels;
- Identify gene targets for editing through mining of internal and external large datasets, utilizing data science skills;
- Develop and implement research and technology-driven proposals;
- Be accountable for cross-functional work in multiple R&D project teams;
- Effectively summarize and communicate research findings to stakeholders through written reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders;
- Seek collaboration with colleagues in other functions and departments to solve problems;
- Extract new developments from the scientific literature to aid in problem solving;
- Contribute a sustained high level of technical skill and achievement.
WHO YOU ARE
Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:
Required Qualifications:
- M.S. degree in biological sciences;
- Background or applied experience in genetics, molecular biology, or plant biology;
- Specialized knowledge of molecular biology, genetics, plant physiology, or plant development;
- Team player with a track record of collaborating with diverse levels and functions;
- An open-minded personality with the ability to work independently;
- Distinct communication skills with fluency in English, both verbal and written;
- Track record in cross-functional project management with timely delivery of results;
- Demonstrated ability to ensure accountability for cross-functional groups;
- Demonstrated agility and flexibility conducting research to solve complex problems;
- Fundamental skills required to generate, manipulate, and interpret large datasets;
- Experience with coding.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in biological sciences; OR
- M.S. degree in biological sciences with minimum of 4 years relevant experience; OR
- Experience with Nextflow, AWS cloud services;
- Experience with at least one of python, R, RShiny, or SQL.
